This just showed up on the Utah Rocket group's email list. If you've ever launched Estes type model rockets and thought they were impressive wait until you see the stuff these guys put up in the sky. Their web site is http://www.uroc.org/ . Patrick -------- Original Message -------- Subject: [UROC Mail List] Launch is a GO! Weather looks to be great. Mitch Adamson (UROC Vice Pres.) drove out to the launch site last week and checked the ground. At that time the ground was driveable and since the site has not had any signifcant precip since then it should still be good. Rumor has it that amongst the stuff flying tomorrow, Mich will be flying a large number of Hybrids. (Cool weather is the best time to fly them). As is usually the case in the early months (jan and feb) the launch will be a Misfire alley launch. This means that the UROC equipment trailer will not be making the trip out. Mitch will be allowing people to fly off of his equipment (up to 1/2" rod) and you are welcome to bring your own gear as well. Should be a great launch. Flying starts arond 9:00am. Make sure to tell Mitch "thanks" for putting the launch together.

My boss is into rocketry, and just today described to me an upcoming annual event which will be held in Alberta, Canada, in July. Previously, someone launched a Port-A-Potty with to motors costing $400 apiece. Unfortunately, the parachutes deployed immediately on liftoff, which hampered both vertical and lateral stability. Makes you wonder what those guys could do with a bowling ball. ;-) Bob Grant ----- Original Message ----- From: "Patrick Wiggins" <paw@trilobyte.net> To: "utah astronomy listserve" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Friday, February 25, 2005 8:13 PM Subject: [Utah-astronomy] Fwd: Launch is a GO!]

Perhaps you jest, but they did approach me about launching bowling balls. They thought it would be cheaper until they found out I could drop one from a plane for ~$40. Their costs, as you noted, are considerably higher. Patrick
Don't touch that dial just yet. I am currently working out a plan to build a bowling ball launcher that will look like a big refractor. If we could house this in a building with a roll off roof, how cool would that be??? ;) Quoting Patrick Wiggins <paw@trilobyte.net>:

Model rocketry actually does have a bowling ball launch competition. Here's a club in Arizona that's having one soon http://www.ahpra.org/ follow the links to see the rules etc. Discovery Channel had a nice program on it a little over a year ago that showed one of the largest rocket launch competitions, known as LDRS (Large Dangerous Rockets) In it they showed the bowling ball launch, some of these guys were shooting bowling balls 2,000 ft into the air on ~$40 motors, sure is impressive, of course so is a Cessna 172 climbing to altitiude right? ;-) They also showed that Porta-Potty launch very impressive!! still climbed a little despite dragging two very large parachutes behind it. But seriously I've been out to launch rockets with these guys many times, and it's a fun time (could've said "it's a blast" but I resisted) I 'highly' recommend it, oops sorry couldn't resist that one.
