Related, but simpler -- Does anyone know of any good resources for instructions about basic maintenance of a mechanical (non-computerized) equatorial mount? Is this something that can be undertaken by klutzes, or is this too best left to professionals? The thing is, all my observing equipment taken together cost well under $500, and I'd hate to have to pay big money for maintenance. The fine motion controls are a little sticky. I think it is rather straightforward, your problem could be lubrication. I took apart a lower end mount and put it back together and it fixed nothing. Some mounts just have some inherent problems over time. I do applaud your use of inexpensive equipment to do what seems like some pretty advanced observing. This is the true spirit of the amateur astronomer.
