Yes, I see that now. I'm warning you Joan, I would never trust Sirius! Do you ever see him "glaring" at you for no apparent reason? Does he have free access to the whole house all night while you are asleep?I appropriated an older Intes solar wedge yesterday. I have some "heat dissipation issues" to work on it to make it save at public events but Wow, you should see the image. I compared it side by side with Bill Cowles Lunt wedge yesterday in his 102 Celestron. Now I can't wait for the next solar event at Winchester Park.

If y'all wold care to journey to SPOC we could use the Bogdan refractor and DayStar filter to do a bit of Sun viewing. Perhaps this coming Saturday before the public star party? patrick On 14 Sep 2011, at 14:29, jcarman6@q.com wrote:

For those of you in the South Valley area (Riverton, Herriman, South Jordan, Draper, Sandy, etc.) I could do an ad hoc sun party during the ATM session this Saturday. I fit a Tuthill filter to my 8" dob to make a sun scope. It would be a last minute thing but why not.
Anyone else interested in flap jacks and solar viewing at SPOC Saturday late afternoon?

Ok, I will stay out of site discussion, I don't care, I'll go where everyone else agrees. Just tell me the time and location. Additional scopes would be great. I'll bring a camera with a T-ring, see what pretty pictures I can get off of you all. :) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chrismo" <djchrismo@gmail.com> To: "Utah Astronomy" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Wednesday, September 14, 2011 4:21:16 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Sun viewing (Was: Patrick Wiggins Off Topic) I suppose asking if there will be flapjacks is a bit much On Wed, Sep 14, 2011 at 4:13 PM, Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com>wrote:

I'm good to go, I'll bet Bill Cowles would be out. I'm thinking Tom Watson would be along if he is up to it and gets an invitation. Looking like a "solar party" starter group. Anyone else up for it?

Ok. I guess we'll skip the food (ATS after the star party can make up for that) but still do a bit of Sun viewing early. I'm going to be at the drop zone until about 5:00 but will go to SPOC after that and get the refractor and DayStar filter going. patrick On 14 Sep 2011, at 21:39, Steve Fisher wrote:

My daughter is a vegetarian and I am constantly scolded for my occassional ingestion of meat. The funny thing is, when she comes over for dinner on the 2 Sundays per year on average, when I grill lobster tails, she suddenly and conveniently forgets her usual dietary guidelines. Much to my amusement. Anybody tried that new "Donner Party" beef jerky? Supposedly it has true pioneer flavor.
Yum! -- Hey, your daughter reminds me of a couple of other vegetarian friends of mine -- both eat seafood. One of them explains her love of crab by saying she can eat things that are ugly. ________________________________ From: Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Thursday, September 15, 2011 9:45 AM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Sun viewing (Was: Patrick Wiggins Off Topic) My daughter is a vegetarian and I am constantly scolded for my occassional ingestion of meat. Joe, I'm afraid you're way behind the curve on this one:

So I'm out on the flapjacks again. Well, I will bring a variety of delicious baked goods, since I have yet to join SLAS or really demonstrate my value in providing anything other than sarcastic humor. I'll leave the margaritas to Steve.

much

That's my thought, though Saturday evening is supposed to bring some clearing. If it clears in the west before sunset is anybody's guess. I'm going to try and attend the morning ATM session at Mat's, so I won't get the shakes if it's cloudy later on. I'll be bringing my mocked-up 6" f/1.25 astro-camera. I threw together a wooden housing to do some preliminary visual tests. Funniest looking "telescope" you've ever seen. A wooden cube about 8 inches square.

I'll take some pics of it this weekend. It's not ready for imaging tests quite yet, hopefully October. Also this current configuration is just for testing. I'll remount the optics in metal once I get the spacings worked out, and on the condition that the imagery is good enough.
Crap, latest prediction for Saturday is "isolated thunderstorms." Two days ago it was "sunny" My weather rock is as good a predictor as any - if it is wet is raining, if it is white .... Glad we didn't plan a breakfast... maybe the next Saturday. Have to say a 8" refractor with a H-A filter is quite attractive. Either way, I'll bring my camera with a t-ring adapter. :) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chrismo" <djchrismo@gmail.com> To: "Utah Astronomy" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Thursday, September 15, 2011 11:38:23 AM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Sun viewing (Was: Patrick Wiggins Off Topic) post some pix, and some of the pix taken with it... i'm fascinated by anything 'home built' On Thu, Sep 15, 2011 at 11:32 AM, Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> wrote:

It will be interesting to see the astro-camera! As I have previously mentioned, if the sun is out during the ATM session, we can view it with my scope. Also Chuck, if you have one of your 50mm solar scopes ready, bring it and we can all admire it. No pressure to finish one by then though... Whoa, if Chuck's sun scope is going to be at the ATM, I want to see- can I can I please. Tell me where and when the ATM is. Off topic - particularly for Chuck. Seeing as how you are quite the "engineer" (probably know more than 95% of the engineers out there) I recommend you (or anyone) read "The Devil in the White City" by Erik Larson (I just finished it). It's about the planning and construction of the 1893 Chicago World's fair and probably the first identified pschopathic killer. All true - non fiction. Specifically, the original, first ever, Ferris Wheel, designed and built by George Ferris. It stood 264 feet high, held (I think) 36 pullman (as in train cars) cars that could hold 60 people each. Powered by steam engine. There's a picture of it on the internet - truly incredible. Ferris did the calculations and convinced the fair committee to let him build it. The wheel was built AND tested at the fair first, no mock-ups or pretests. The Chicago World's fair also introduced the world to Juicy Fruit Gum, Shredded Wheat and Aunt Jamima pancakes. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mat Hutchings (H USA)" <mat.hutchings@siemens.com> To: "Utah Astronomy" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Thursday, September 15, 2011 11:52:35 AM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Sun viewing (Was: Patrick Wiggins Off Topic) It will be interesting to see the astro-camera! That is a super picture Dave. It really shows the size of the original Ferris wheel. You get a real feel for just how big it was. And yes, 2160 - at 36 pullman cars with each holding sixty, that comes to 2196 people. Mat, I just ordered the parts, so can't even start building those yet. Hopefully they will arrive in time to start by the 23rd. I might bring my Weightless Woodshop refractor, though, with solar filter. I'll bring the PST too, for some H-a views. Resend your address, I may have accidentally deleted it.
