A friend and I were out over the GSL last evening and I got this shot of the Moon rising over Antelope Island: http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/~paw/temp/2010AUG24/2010AUG24-08.JPG A moment later I got this one with the Moon reflecting off the underside of the wing: http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/~paw/temp/2010AUG24/2010AUG24-09.JPG Fun reflections but I like the first one better. And while I've got your attention, anyone able to explain the vertical stripes in this image which my copilot got with her cell phone's camera? I'm guessing the stripes are somehow being caused by the propeller but I can't figure how: http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/~paw/temp/2010AUG24/2010AUG24-07.JPG Carpe Noctem, patrick

Thanks Joe. I was just looking at both of them again and noticed a dark band just below the Moon that goes from one side of the image to the other. Is that haze or maybe could it be the shadow of the Earth? Seems like I've seen Earth shadows in pictures taken from mountain tops. ??? patrick On 25 Aug 2010, at 01:21, Joe Bauman wrote:

I vote for Eath Shadow. Hi Patrick, I can't figure this out -- to me it only looks like darker layers of atmosphere, but maybe I'm not seeing what you mean. I watched the moon rise while on my way home to Mt. Pleasant from SLC on Monday night. The Moon was above Earth's shadow, and both made a spectacular sight. Had I not been in urbanized areas I would have tried to find a good spot for a pic. So, last night, I think Patrick also imaged the Earth's shadow. The geometry is right, based on what I saw Monday. In northern Utah valleys we're surrounded by mountains high enough that we often miss good sightings of the Earth's shadow. I'm surprised, though, that Patrick hasn't seen it before. He must just go to bed too early. ;-) Kim -----Original Message----- From: utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Joe Bauman Sent: Wednesday, August 25, 2010 11:39 AM To: Utah Astronomy Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Moon shot Hi Patrick, I can't figure this out -- to me it only looks like darker layers of atmosphere, but maybe I'm not seeing what you mean.
