This morning I noticed a huge, almost perfect "Y" in the eastern sky. With El Nath as the center, the legs of the Y were marked by Capella, Aldebaran, and Jupiter. It was like a giant Mercedes-Benz logo in the sky. The symmetry was striking. Not perfect, but close. It doesn't look symmetrical on a chart or screen because of projection distortions. Take a look before Jupiter moves out of place, and tell me if you see it.
I've had clouds in the early mornings... I just got a new telescope last week (Celestron Omni XLT 102mm refractor), and I've been wanting to look at Jupiter... no joy, yet... Anyway, since this apparition involves a planet, shouldn't we call it a "plasterism"?? ;)

Too overcast this morning to see it. Only Capella visible. With Jupiter moving with respect the stars, the symmetry will be broken soon. Glad I saw it when I did. On Wed, Jul 24, 2013 at 12:36 PM, Carl Ericsson <ericssoncarl@yahoo.com>wrote:

We seem to be trading early morning clouds!)) Here in La Sal, I saw your plasterism clearly this morning!)) Also, I finally got to see Jupiter with my new 4" refractor... very nice!)) It has been years since I last looked at Jupiter with a decent telescope!) My little 80mm f/5 refractor just couldn't do it justice... at least, not with my limited eyepiece collection, and cheap Barlow lens...

If you had a good view of Jupiter as low as it is, it's testament to the clarity of your skies. Congrats! On Thu, Jul 25, 2013 at 6:48 AM, Carl Ericsson <ericssoncarl@yahoo.com>wrote:

Clear skies this morning, the big "Y" in the sky is holding-up well. Jupiter is visibly pulling away from Mars (actually I guess Mars is pulling away from Jupiter). It really is a striking pattern and IMO, worth getting outside at 5:00 AM. Jupiter seemed appreciably brighter than it did just a few days ago. Perhaps the skies are more transparent this morning. Less smoke in the air. Lonely Fomalhaut hangs well below a waning gibbous moon in the south. A reminder of the crisp autumn nights ahead. I've seen remarkably few early morning sporadic meteors so-far this summer. That should change soon with the Perseids coming up in a few weeks. Favorable moon phase this year, a waxing crescent should be setting just about the time the radiant rises on the night of the predicted peak.
Thanks for pointing it out! Beautiful this morning, with Mars tagging along. I definitely see a Y! Maybe I'll try to get a photo tomorrow morning and send it to BYU magazine... Dion On Jul 24, 2013, at 6:36 AM, Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> wrote:

Probably nobody on the BYU campus will be able to see it. By the time Jupiter clears the mountains, it will be daylight. Tell them they'll need to be at least several miles west of the Wasatch front to get a good view. On Fri, Jul 26, 2013 at 5:46 AM, Dion Davidson <diondavidson@yahoo.com>wrote:

It's still looking good and getting higher in the morning sky every day. I think people along I-15 can see it clear the mountains east of Provo by now. Orion was throwing a leg over the mountains this morning- can autumn be far off? On Fri, Jul 26, 2013 at 6:01 AM, Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> wrote:

You hope that autumn is far-off? It's my favorite time of year. On Tue, Jul 30, 2013 at 8:26 AM, Siegfried Jachmann <siegfried@jachmann.org>wrote:

Mine too but I'm thinking in terms of how many autumns do I have left. On Tue, Jul 30, 2013 at 9:15 AM, Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> wrote:

Have you prepared the bottle with marbles in it yet? We're too youung to think about that. I have to admit that I have no idea what the bottle with marbles is about, Brent. Right over my head. It struck me this morning that the sky is much darker at 6:00 AM than it was just 5 weeks ago. A few more weeks and we'll see red, orange and yellow highlighting the mountains. On Tue, Jul 30, 2013 at 11:06 AM, Brent Watson <brentjwatson@yahoo.com>wrote:

It's getting higher every morning before the sky lightens up, and the symmetry is holding. Jupiter moves very slowly- but you can see Mars pulling eastward noticeably after just a day or two. I'm sure most of Utah county can see it now, unless they are right up against the mountains. Mercury was amazingly bright as it cleared the skyline. First time I've seen it during this morning apparition. On Wed, Jul 24, 2013 at 6:36 AM, Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> wrote:

Well, Jupiter has moved along far enough in it's orbit that the symmetry of the "Y" is broken. It's been moving along through Gemini steadily, and even though it takes Jupiter about 12 years to circumnavigate the ecliptic, a month's span of time is enough to note a drastic change relative to background stars. Mars has really pulled-away and is out of the body of Gemini completely, putting more distance between it and Jupiter every morning.
