Re: [Utah-astronomy] [NASA HQ News] NASA's Kepler Mission Announces a Planet
I saw this on Space.com earlier today. Really cool! Wonder if they expected this level of discovery from Kepler? Bruce
The exoplanet app rolled over 1000 confirmed exoplanets about a week ago - now we are closing in on 2000. All that great Kepler news and yet the only NASA related story on the national news I watched this evening was about problems NASA is having with spacesuits. Sigh... patrick On 26 Feb 2014, at 16:59, Dale Hooper <Dale.Hooper@sdl.usu.edu> wrote:

On the other hand, the guy did almost drown in space. That's newsworthy too. I have seen articles about the Kepler discovery. Add to that the fact they dismissed an early problem with water collecting.

Remember that all of these planet discoveries are in a very small target area: http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/kepler/multimedia/images/fov-kepler-drawin... Also they are only planets with orbital planes that cause transits of their parent stars. We can extrapolate that the total number of any particular type of planet discovered must be huge in the galaxy, even if only one or two candidates have been confirmed so-far.
My understanding is of all the planets discovered in the "habital zone", there are only one or two they believe meet the criteria of being able to support life.
The exoplanet app rolled over 1000 confirmed exoplanets about a week ago -
now we are closing in on 2000.
Clear skies, Dale.
