Is this a shower that makes observing worthwhile? I'm in the northeast....
The Drac shower is listed on the IMO calendar with a variable maximum rate and a peak on Oct. 8. I saw last year's peak somewhat by accident. I was out observing DSOs anyway looking towards the southern horizon. I noticed about 4-5 per hour of mag 3-4 meteors with long 3-7 deg tails streaming from a radiant from behind my head around the north pole. It was a nice low frequency shower, but not anything I would recommend making a trip for. This year's near first quarter moon means the meteors will not be visible until after midnight and moonset. In short, if you are up and out of the city, I'd look for them, but it is not worth a special trip. Take your scope so you can fill-in with general observing. - Kurt
