I would think this board would be abuzz with the news. http://www.seeker.com/gravitational-waves-discovery-1598074959.html Dale caught it first, but IMHO the link he provided to an astronomy.com article was probably the most poorly written scientific announcement ever written . This is really exciting news. Wonder what Stephen Hawkings is thinking righr now
Stephen Hawking? What about Kip Thorne? He predicted over 30 years ago that the first likely gravitational-wave candidate would be the merger of a binary black hole system. Pretty prescient, I'd say. Besides, he’s a native of Utah (born in Logan) and was once a professor at the University of Utah. Dave On [Feb 13], at [Feb 13] 12:51 PM, Joan Carman wrote:

I don't think Hawking is a fan of Einstein, not an opponent, just trying to build upon and/or get around some of Einstein's theories. Do you know where Thorne is these days? I keep mixing Kip Thorne with Rip Torn who was an elderly comedian many years ago. Talk about a contrast of personalities. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dave Gary" <davegary@me.com> To: "Utah Astronomy" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Saturday, February 13, 2016 1:39:32 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Gravitational Waves Stephen Hawking? Thanks Dave, I'll have a look see about bringing Kip Thorne back to his old stomping grounds - i.e., Utah, to see if he would be willing to make a presentation to SLAS. I'm going from memory here, but I seem to recall that Dr. Thorne was born into an LDS family, and as a young man broke away from the church, causing quite a bit of family distress. I think he ended up disowning the church and family members who thought he made a bad decision. You might have a tough row to hoe getting him back to Utah, but good luck- he would be an excellent guest speaker, for sure.
Sky and I heard Kip Thorne speak in Utah, many years ago. It was at one of the universities -- maybe UVU? He spoke highly of his mother, talking about the way she was not allowed to teach at Utah State University because she was a woman, even though she was well qualified. He gave no indication that he was uncomfortable to be back in Utah. Sent from my iPhone

The invitation has been sent. He was easy to find, the correct Thorne at Caltech, on the internet. The internet is wonderful. No mention of old stomping grounds, just a straight forward invite from kindred spirits (SLAS). Don't know when or if I will get a response, but I'm willing to wade out into the waters :). Have offered hotel and travel expenses paid by SLAS :). IF, and that's a big if, he agrees and something can be arranged, everyone on this board is welcome to attend the meeting, as it is free :) Keep y'all posted on this one. BTW February 17th, SLAS has Ben Bromley from the University of Utah coming to talk about planet formation. It's free to all too. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chuck Hards" <chuck.hards@gmail.com> To: "Utah Astronomy" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Saturday, February 13, 2016 6:43:08 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Gravitational Waves I'm going from memory here, but I seem to recall that Dr. Thorne was born into an LDS family, and as a young man broke away from the church, causing quite a bit of family distress.
