As has been discussed here before, parking rules at the U of U may effect SLAS meetings. With free parking now not starting until 8:00 pm, those wishing to to attend SLAS meetings which start at 7:00 may have to pay for parking. One possible option would be to move the meetings to a new venue. I really don't like that idea but if that does come to pass, where to move to? Ideally any such meeting hall would be free, located in the Salt Lake Valley, able to handle up to 75 people, have a good sound and video projection system, be available once a month from 7:00 to 9:30 pm and have free nearby parking. Any ideas? patrick
I wonder if the U could sell us cheapo parking passes that were only good between 6 and 7 on the third Wednesday of every month. If they would, the cost should be minimal. I've been going through the U's Parking Services website this evening. Not terribly user friendly but them I'm not much of a computer person either. Where's a 10 year old computer whiz when you need them. :) There's mention of a $2.00 evening permit that can be purchased online. I logged on using my U employee ID and did find the $2 pass but stopped before paying when they wanted me to register my car. Since most SLASers are not U employees I'm next going to go at it as a visitor to see if one can purchase a $2 pass without having to first register a vehicle. There must be some way to do that as the U can't expect everyone visiting campus to register first. To quote the king in the King and I: "Is a puzzlement" patrick
All, The U of U does sell parking passes for one evening for $2.00 to park in any U A or E lot. It is very easy to purchase these online and you can use a different car each month if you want. I will send info in the next few days so members can be prepared for the next weeks meeting. Thanks Rodger C. An explanation of the U of U parking system may be needed here. It is my understanding and according to the FAQ Page http://commuterservices.utah.edu/permit-types/virtual-permits/newpermitsyste mfaquntitled.php that they no longer issue a physical Paper Permit. With the new system you need to register your vehicle and the license plate becomes your permit, you can have 2 plates registered at a time and change plates in the system as often as you like. You pay for the permit in advance and just park. They drive through the lots and use a camera and computer that reads the plate and compares it to the database and clears it or flags it accordingly for citations. Go to Commuter Services https://utah.t2hosted.com/cmn/index.aspx click purchase permit then Visitor Login You need to create a visitor account with your email address and a password Then you will be able to select the "$2.00 / day - Evening A Permit - Valid in all A, U, E lots after 4 pm" Select the beginning and ending dates you want it to be active Then enter your Vehicle information. And proceed to check out. After initial setup you can return to manage or purchase permits and Vehicle info And when purchasing a permit just select the vehicle you want to use I believe you can purchase several in advance for specific days but I have not confirmed this. I hope this helps clarify the Parking permits Jamie B -----Original Message----- From: Utah-Astronomy [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Rodger C. As usual, a lot of hand wringing and dithering (love that word) without knowing any facts. Would seem to me the first thing to do would have a bored member (thanks Deloy) check with the U and see jut what, if anything, they can do to accommodate us. Seems they have expressed an interest in working with us, ie., the upcoming speaking engagement. Lets first see what they will or will not do for us, before we go off halfcocked. I would see that falling on you, Rodger, as you are currently in discussion with them, and the office you hold. BTW, I have no desire to climb the outside stairs at the UMONH in the Winter months, or pack the equipment back and forth. Speaking of Deloy, what access would he have in the winter months? Maybe Joe could run a bus from the parking lot. Just joshing, Joe. 72 Sent from my iPad

Jamie, would you prefer to pay $2 per meeting for the Engineering Building area or nothing for the museum area, all other things equal? Sorry if anyone thinks a discussion of options is hand-wringing, but I certainly don't. I think everyone should park at the museum. The club should then rent a bus and bring everyone to the engineering building. ;) Sorry Joe, I just couldn't resist. On a more serious note, the parking at the engineering venue is too much of a hassle. Yes, it can be done, but why? KISS! All,
The U of U does sell parking passes for one evening for $2.00 to park in any U A or E lot. It is very easy to purchase these online and you can use a different car each month if you want. I will send info in the next few days so members can be prepared for the next weeks meeting.
Thanks Rodger C. Fry

I wonder if the U could sell us cheapo parking passes that were only good between 6 and 7 on the third Wednesday of every month. If they would, the cost should be minimal.

Any ideas?

FWIW, the program I manage for the U has done presentations in several parts of the museum building. There are ramps everywhere and I've yet to find a place where we could not reach with our large, wheeled equipment cart. We may have a way to let SLAS use either our IMAX or dome theatre for SLAS monthly meetings without us having to charge for it. Could a SLAS officer please get in touch with me to discuss? I just got off the phone with a very nice person at the U's parking system. Like I say she was very nice but also very firm in saying if someone wants to park on campus after 8:00 pm (10:00 pm in some places) one has to pay. She offered two options. One is to pay the $2.00 that's been mentioned here before. That must be done online but before one can do that they have to register. I can't help but wonder how many people are going to be willing to preregister online in order to attend SLAS meetings. The other option is to visit their office and pay without registering but the price in that case is $5. FWIW, my boss at the U (who made it possible for SLAS to meet at the U in the first place) is looking into the situation. Plus the guy I work with for my lectures at the museum is looking into how they might be able to help. Hopefully we'll know more in time for tomorrow's SLAS board meeting. patrick On 09 Sep 2014, at 15:12, Brent Watson via Utah-Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> wrote:

Having to pay for parking, even if it is only $2, might be confusing for new members and other visitors. It may also send the wrong message given the countless empty stalls in that lot after 6pm. Is there a downside to pushing the meeting start time to 8pm? For alternative options... The SLCC South City campus has a new expansion that is especially nice. The Redwood campus has facilities for large groups and often hosts conferences. Could one of these spaces work? Lastly, the SLCC Miller campus has facilities for rent to any group (if free accommodations can not be obtained). 45 could be seated for $120 for half a day. 90 can be seated for $185. It includes LCD projector, etc. To go from $0 to $1300/year for meeting space would probably be quite the shock to the budget. Another option might be the Rio Tinto center that houses the Natural History Museum of Utah. I understand we already have contacts with them. It may be worth asking. A third option is possibly Wheeler Farm. I am not sure they have the required facilities to host groups, however. -Ryan On Tue, September 9, 2014 01:11, Wiggins Patrick wrote:

Hi Ryan, Yes, paying for parking could be an impediment for some so hopefully we can avoid that somehow. Moving the meeting start time to 8:30 did get mentioned but was not well received. In fact meetings were recently moved up from 7:30 to 7:00 because so many members wanted to start early. Would you be willing to look into the SLCC option and report on what you find at tomorrow's board meeting? As for the museum (Rio Tinto), they really like working with SLAS and have said before that meetings there could be a possibility. And they do have two rooms that could easily accommodate SLAS and parking there is free. If I remember correctly part of the reason meetings were moved to Wednesdays was because Wednesdays are the only days the museum is open late (until 9) and we might one day want to move up there. Maybe that time is now. patrick On 09 Sep 2014, at 01:19, Ryan Simpkins <astro@ryansimpkins.com> wrote:

Lastly, the SLCC Miller campus has facilities for rent to any group (if free accommodations can not be obtained). 45 could be seated for $120 for half a day. 90 can be seated for $185. It includes LCD projector, etc. To go from $0 to $1300/year for meeting space would probably be quite the shock to the budget.
Another option might be the Rio Tinto center that houses the Natural History Museum of Utah. I understand we already have contacts with them. It may be worth asking. A third option is possibly Wheeler Farm. I am not sure they have the required facilities to host groups, however.
