UMNH Science Fiction Movie Night
I'm working with the Utah Museum of Natural History to pick and then host a free screening of a science fiction movie in the fall of this year. I've got a few ideas but, as with the last couple of times I did a movie night, I'd like to get your input on what movie should be screened. Ideas? Patrick
Patrick This Island Earth Conquest of the Red Planet War of the Worlds Forbidden Planet This ought to get you started. There are more but the last time I saw them I was 9-10-11 years old and those files are in deep archive. Aloha Rob
Patrick The movie was not "Conquest of the Red Planet" but I believe it was actually" Conquest of Space" 1955. 1955 was a year of many classic sci fi movies, I was 10 then. Aloha Rob
Rob I was 12 when I saw "Conquest of Space" and I saw it at the movie house on Baratania Street in Honolulu. That movie was so real to me then and the special affects were incredible for the time. Kids would probably be disappointed these days at what was so spectacular then. It was the first of its kind. War of the Worlds was really great for its time too. Jim Conquest of Space was a beginning moment for me too. I had made a plastic model of the Disney wheel and the multi stage ship and had hung them on string against a star painted black cloth and did photos w/ my Mom's zone focused Kodak Brownie (not sharp!) Aloha Rob
Wasn't it a screen adaptation of the book by...let's see, it was either Clarke or Ley, wasn't it? Wasn't it originally titled "Prelude to Space"? Those model kits have been re-released, BTW. --- Rob Ratkowski <ratkwski@hawaii.rr.com> wrote:

Jim Dunno who wrote the movie, it was just great for a kid at the beginning of the space age. I had a great collection of articles from LIFE Magazine (I wish my Mom never tossed that out after I moved west) and even the Disney "comic book" which I still have, showing the Wheel/Torus space station. I remember when I read an article (in Life magazine) about a 2 stage V-2 that reached 250 MILES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now it's cruising craters on Mars in hi rez via the WWW ................ Aloha (maybe sun again today ) Rob
My final suggestion: The Rocky Horror Picture Show Now, THERE'S an unusual alien. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! - Internet access at a great low price. http://promo.yahoo.com/sbc/
Bonnestell and Ley did the book; I'm lucky enough to own a copy (quite a collector's item these days I hear). --- Chuck Hards <chuckhards@yahoo.com> wrote:

Hiya Patrick-- You might consider Gattica. No laser fights, faster-than-light-travel, demons or any of those other tired cliches of the genre. Instead, a thoroughly believable movie about a near future of genetic discrimination. Michael On May 19, 2004, at 12:28 AM, Patrick Wiggins wrote:

Did anyone see "Solaris"? I read the book some 30+ years ago and loved it, though I'm sure it was a translation, I think it was originally written in Polish or Russian. Probably one of the most original "aliens" ever concieved. (As an aside, what is it with Clooney and 'oceans'? Solaris, Perfect Storm, O-10 & O-11) I did not see the film (My choices are always voted-down at home, the rest of the family has wildly different interests than I), but am curious as to whether it did the story justice. --- Michael Carnes <moogiebird@earthlink.net> wrote:

Here are my suggestions, Patrick, all depend on the atmosphere desired. Some are classics, some are pure camp: THX1138 Dark Star (the original "Alien") Attack of the Killer Tomatos A Boy and his Dog Plan 9 from Outer Space Things To Come Metropolis 2001: A Space Odyssey (still the best, IMO) Heavy Metal Young Frankenstein And I know I'll think of a dozen others as soon as I hit "send". __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? I saw Solaris (twice in fact)...the second time was not intentional. That should give you some idea of my thoughts on the film. I'm sure the book would be much more entertaining and I'll give it a read someday. BTW, I just saw a teaser last night for Oceans 12 during the preview before Troy. I'm not sure where O-10 came from...maybe a new super filter from Lumicon? My film suggestions for Movie Night; The Andromeda Strain, Soylent Green, the Purple Monster Strikes...
