Chuck I have only been on this listing about 2 month. I would say from my expierence that to learn to know Chuck Hards a person learns - he is a rare individule with a exceptional knowledge of astronomy and related subjects, a wonderful ability to express that knowledge in written form and all coupled with a great since of humor. When you learn that, who is going to get offended by you? No one. Jim Chuck Hards <chuckhards@yahoo.com> wrote: --- Jim Gibson wrote:

Joe, Wayne, Jim, those who wrote me off-list, and everyone else, thanks. I'm touched by your remarks. Truth be told, the list is kind of a surrogate club for me- so rarely able to attend meetings or star-parties, but the list format works perfectly for me. Many times while working, I have to wait a few minutes for a process to run it's course, and that's when I check for list postings & reply if I have something to contribute. Heck, a club meeting almost every day, what a great thing! Thanks again, my friends. In a few months I should have more time to come out and play. Having *never* been the recipient of any slings or arrows because of my posts here I can't imagine what all the fuss is about... :-) Keep up the good work Chuck! Patrick
Thanks, Patrick, but I'm just a lieutenant around here, guys like you are the generals! I feel bad about Mr. Fisher leaving the list, although he did state that it was at club meetings where he ran into objectionable attitudes, so I hate to see the list take unwarranted criticism. A couple of us made some remarks to the effect that *Astronomy* magazine lacked depth; perhaps we insulted his favorite publication. (And who in heck told him that professionals don't use CCD's? Was he at an Ansel Adams exhibit, or an astronomy club meeting?) That said, it is after all impossible to please everyone, all the time. I think our successes as a group of individuals with common interests, more than outweighs any areas of neglect. Especially when you realize we do it for love, not riches. Thanks again for the kind words, Mon General! C. --- Patrick Wiggins <paw@trilobyte.net> wrote:

I'm not sure if it was your comments about _Astronomy_ that upset the fellow or someone making a derogatory comment about his goto scope. I saw a webpage somewhere that discussed the stages of a mailing list growing through a friendly group with a common interest then dissent like this, then denigrating newcomers with messages like "Look in the FAQ line xxx" in response to simple questions and then the list dies. I may have misstated or forgotten some steps, if so I'm sorry. Email is a different communication media; it's hard to not offend someone sometimes. The lack of visual and tonal clues can make it easy to misinterpret an email. Just a few random thoughts; I've always appreciated your contributions to this list and to SLAS. Any plans for another binopalooza this spring? Bill B. Chuck Hards wrote:

Hi Bill, good to see you post. You wrote:

I didn't pick up on that. GoTo scopes are marvelous inventions; it's just too bad that most of the on-board database is invisible to small scopes (and just a 'smudge' in larger instruments). As an aside I think that folks who go this route are cheating themselves of half the fun of astronomy- learning the skies in detail. Potato, potahto.

Excellent summation. Fortunately for us, we don't seem to have any FAQ pointers in this group. In fact, there are usually at least several thoughtful replies to most beginner questions, almost every time.

Aw, gosh, thanks. My wife doensn't listen to me, I'm glad some of you folks do! ;) Yes, I am planning another Binopalooza this year, though it will probably be June or later due to a packed work schedule. I'm also taking suggestions for a new site. Lakeside has darkness and proximity going for it, but it is darned dusty. Also, what about an all-nighter? Chuck: Glad to hear you're thinking about another binocular night, last one was fun. My son has picked up a pair of Canon IS binoc's and it would be fun to compare them against mounts and bigger optics. Lakeside isn't as dusty early in the year, seems like if we looked around on the hillside we could find some place up out of the lake bottom dust. Last year we went to Strawberry during early July, no dust and good skies. I wonder if the folks at the visitor center would consider turning off the lights and leaving the bathrooms open all night, can't hurt to ask. Bill B. Chuck Hards wrote:

I missed that particular offensive post, but I just want to say I'm so disgusted by everything Chuck has ever written that I'm cancelling my subscription right now -- NOT! Fer Pete's sake, I really enjoy the give and take and ribbing that goes on. As the guy who could tell his wife I was totally wrong, I thought that was just a grand comment. -- Joe
