It looks like we wont have to do the bowling ball drop. Genisis made a good crater sample. Does anyone on the list know where it landed? I wonder if they will be able to salvage any science from it. Thanks, David Dunn 801-961-3253

I saw the spot on the map. It deffinatley landed on Dugway just north of Granet Mountain. It was barried about half way up. I saw a chopper view when they first found it. It made a pretty good splat. The splash made a pretty uniform pattern. I heard that the wafer (sp?) may be broken but they can still analyize the piceces. There is a lot of talk floating around so I don't know how authoritative that was since I heard it shortly after landing. jg James Helsby <cyanics@xmission.com> wrote: Approximate coords: 40 deg. 7 min. 40 sec 113 deg. 30 min 29 sec JH David Dunn wrote:

I just got back from Dugway. I'm told the impact was almost in the center of the oval where they hoped it would come down (only slower). -- Joe

Dear friends, This morning I uploaded 10 photos onto my Utah Astronomy album, showing a reporter's eye view of the Genesis mishap, Sept. 8. I made a separate album within my main one; it's on the second page of the main album. As you probably know, the media was not allowed in the area where the capsule capture was to take place. Instead, we were gathered in a huge hanger at Dugway Proving Ground's Michael Army Air Field. That's where the capture helicopters took off and were to bring back the capsule. The reentry itself was about 31 miles from the hanger. We watched the mishap live on TV (one seemed a high resolution screen). I took some pictures and have posted a few in my album, which you can access by following the link at the bottom of this note. Best wishes, Joe Bauman
Yeah, real smart of those recovery folk to land a frigging black hawk on top of the capsule. Nothing like those big rotor blades kicking up as much dust and sand as possible to make sure the capsule is good and contaminated... sheesh. What were those guys thinking?! -Rich --- Joe Bauman <bau@desnews.com> wrote:

Rich I think the picture of the Blackhawk near the Genesis was taken with an exteem zoom causing it to appear a lot closer to the object than it really was.
