RE: [Utah-astronomy] Re: Star partyetiquetteforcrumbcrunchersandparents
Chuck, I have a mirror cover and a scopecoat but one still needs to exercise caution. I recall at TSP several scopes were toppled over by the wind. Every year someone's scope is damaged at Texas Star Party because of the wind. Debbie

Actually, this falls under the category of human negligence. Dust-covers, scope covers, etc., work very well when used properly. Of course, wind could swing the thing around and give someone a concussion, even on a cloudy day, but don't let that worry you either.
Any scope with a conventional rocker-box can be fitted with a mirror cover if you are concerned about emulating a "Martian Heat Ray". A cam-lock can be installed to prevent unauthorized removal.

I should have said the mirror of a big dobsonian could cause a forest fire.

That is another reason I don't like to leave my scope up during the daytime, besides animals getting to it. A big dobsonian could cause a forest fire or blind someone.

Ouch, Debbie, that could hurt where it hurts most- the wallet! A good rule is to not park the scope vertically, aim the mirror end into the prevailing wind, and secure it with two pairs of tent stakes and some 36"-48" (unstretched) bungee cords, laterally, no more wind problem. --- Debbie <astrodeb@earthlink.net> wrote:
