Anybody know what the topic is at tomorrow's SLAS meeting? It's not listed on the website.
Chuck, I understand that the speaker is Shane Larsen from Utah State. I don't know what topic he will present but every time I have heard him speak, it has been good. Thanks Rodger C. I have some photos I have taken this summer I would like to share with anyone who is interested. These were all taken from my backyard in Sandy. I have much to learn and not very good sky to deal with. I have learned most of this on my own and with the great help of various Yahoo User Groups. Thanks Steve Gallenson Pinwheel Sept. Mark, I have a Celestron Nexstar GPS 11" with a Takahahsi FC 76 piggy backed on top of it. I image with a Hutech Modified Canon T3i on the Takahahsi ( I just got a light pollution filter for it that I have not tried). I guide with a Starlite Xpress Lodestar using Nebulosity for image capture and PHD for guiding. I process with Nebulosity and Photoshop. I am an intermediate beginner. I have finally gotten descent tracking with the ability to get 10 minute exposures. The sky glow has really made me have fight Signal to Noise problems, especially with the fires. I am just starting out, but I am getting some success. Steve Gallenson PS. Indian Hills is my childhood hood. Curtis Elementary, Hillside and Clayton and Highland. Steve, I'be been in this hobby for 46 years now, and you have better equipment than I. Excellent work. If you cant get to a dark site, you may want to look into narrow-band imaging. It is much less affected by light pollution. On Sep 18, 2012 3:54 PM, <gazebo4sale@comcast.net> wrote:

I have some photos I have taken this summer I would like to share with anyone who is interested. These were all taken from my backyard in Sandy. I have much to learn and not very good sky to deal with. I have learned most of this on my own and with the great help of various Yahoo User Groups. Thanks Steve Gallenson

Chuck,
I understand that the speaker is Shane Larsen from Utah State. I don't know what topic he will present but every time I have heard him speak, it has been good.

Mark, No I meant the Indian Hills Elementary. I am out here imaging tonight with Murphy. I am building a new Portable Rig. It is going to be my first attempt with a GEM. it's a Celestron CG5. Bought it on Astromart. I will put the Takahashi on it and guide with a 200 or 300 mm camera lens that I have a 1.25": adapter to accept my Lodestarar. The mount will be here this weekend. I took a widefield shot tonight with a 100mm lens on my DSLR (not my modified one) . Just a shot of the Southern Sky around Altair, guided, no filter 3 minutes. I was surprised by it. The image is stretched pretty bad, but I got data! My first widefield was much simpler than my first DSO much simpler. See: Sky Around Altair I am trying to get a image of the NGC 6946 tonight. Having enough tracking problems that I think I will go to bed. I would like to see some images posted from you and other members of the Society. Greetings I have put together a "Grab and Go" outfit with a CG5 I purchased on AstroMart. I did this for two reasons: 1. My disabled brother can't use eyepieces any more so I will image with this set up at dark sites and display for him on my laptop. 2. I have something to bring to the Society Star Parties (I will renew my membership ASAP). I mounted my TAK FC76 and a Nikon 500 mm Catadioptic lens I got for free as a guider. We had in our stuff an adapter for the old Nikon lens that accepts 1.25" eyepieces, so the Lodestar slides right into it. The payload wiithout camera's is 19 lbs (Those mounting dove tail plates etc are heavy). See: Steve's CG5: http://home.comcast.net/~galico/IMG_0864.JPG I put the Starlite Xpress Lodestar on the Nikon lens and was very pleased with number of stars for guiding that were in view. This is a 1 second exposure, not intended to be nice, just showing all the guidestars I was able to pick up between the clouds last night and this was not polar aligned. See: Guide Star W/ Nikon 500mm: http://home.comcast.net/~galico/starnikon500.jpg If I brought this to a Star Party and had it hooked up to the Laptop, would the light be to offensive? I have used a similar set up for my brother and some friends using a 20" computer monitor, this would also be very bright at a star party, but fun. What could be done about this-a tent? Hi, I would suggest that you get s sheet of red transparent plastic and cut it so the monitor is covered. I do not think anyone would care about that. Star partys are a great idea. Bring it. I made arrangements at work to come in late today in order to attend last night's meeting. But after work yesterday, a few chores around the house and some yard work, I sat down on the couch with my wife after supper for a rare bit of TV watching before it was time to head off to the U... I woke up on the couch at 8:45 PM. :-( Hopefully next month.
You really missed a great meeting, Very informative and entertaining at the same time. Best one I have attended in a long time. The professor almost makes me want to go back to college again. I agree with Mark. A wonderful meeting and a great presenter. We ought to get Shane Larson to visit us often! -A
Yeah, Prof. Shane Larson would be a great guest on one of the late night talk shows. He is an obvious showman. ________________________________ From: Mark Shelton <astroshelton@yahoo.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Thursday, September 20, 2012 9:01 AM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] SLAS meeting topic You really missed a great meeting, Very informative and entertaining at the same time.
