Hi all, In the event anyone here happens to be imaging tonight please try to shoot NGC 3448. I picked up something in it this evening. Plainly visible in several images over a 2+ hour time span, it's not moving and was not there in images taken a few days ago. It's also not listed on the list of Latest Supernovae, http://www.rochesterastronomy.org/supernova.html#2013hj . patrick
Well, whatever it is it's still there. Has not moved relative to the galaxy. Looks like you might have snagged one. Any way to tell if it's a SN or foreground ordinary nova before taking spectral data? Congrats! On Tue, Jan 14, 2014 at 5:44 AM, Wiggins Patrick <paw@getbeehive.net> wrote:

Thanks Chuck but I'm not opening any bubbly just yet. I did get a confirming image from another observatory so I know it's real. But it's so bright I can't help but think the survey scopes or so other amateur got it first. I have reported it. Now I just have to wait. BTW, while working the "whatever it is" I received an alert about a possible GRB. So I swung the scope over and shot the field. And much to my surprise there's something there. Now I just have to find out if that's real too. What a night. patrick On 14 Jan 2014, at 06:18, Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> wrote:

Thanks Rodger but it turns out someone in Japan imaged it almost a full day before I did. Oh well, maybe next time... At least now I know a lot more about reporting PSN discoveries. patrick On 14 Jan 2014, at 11:26, Rodger C. Fry <rcfry@comcast.net> wrote:

Thanks Dave, but it's still not official. Still, I have sent off a message to "higher up" asking why I'm listed one place but not another. Comparing the time of K. Itagaki's image, 2014 01 14.574: http://www.k-itagaki.jp/images/3448.jpg with mine, 2014 01 14.317: http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/~paw/temp/NGC3448_2014JAN06-14.JPG It does seem like I should be listed. Well it's now listed on the IAU Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams page: http://www.cbat.eps.harvard.edu/unconf/followups/J10543413+5417569.html So I guess that's one step closer. But I still don't know for sure. And I see it's still being referred to as a "possible" supernova (PSN). patrick On 16 Jan 2014, at 08:40, Dave Gary <davegary@me.com> wrote:

Well, make that co-discoverer. http://www.cbat.eps.harvard.edu/lists/RecentSupernovae.html So just as I shared discovery credit of my first minor planet with Dr. Holly, I'll split this credit too. Thanks Joe, but I find myself in VERY good company. This strikes me as kind of a big deal. It's one thing for a professionally-staffed automated research observatory to catch a supernova, it's quite another thing to have one spotted by amateurs who use much smaller telescopes and generally use very little automation. No small trick, yet amateurs accounted for about 1/5 of the 1096 supernovae discovered worldwide last year. Congratulations _are_ in order here!
