There will be a small group up at the Z-Rock Gravel Quarry (Pit) outside Park city Friday and Saturday nights. For those not able to attend the activities at Bryce Canyon the weather looks great and temps should be fairly warm, the Moon is not scheduled to make an appearance till after 2AM giving us several good hours of viewing at a relatively dark sky close to SLC. Join us if you can. The SLAS website has a map (SLAS.US) to the site. Bob Taylor
Hi Bob and others who went, I'd be interesting in reading a report on the trip. Was the seeing any good? Did SLC light pollution or Park City lights get in the way much? Craig and I went both Friday and Saturday. The seeing Friday was so nice that we saw Jupiter better than we ever have (at about 1:30 a.m.). Not that we have been observing for years, like so many of you, but multiple banding was very clear including a wavy curly cue feature that Dan explained had the cheery name of a festoon. Saturday there was off and on wind and Jupiter was back to looking like a soft blur, but a moon and its shadow passed over it, so both nights were fun for different reasons. Rob Taylor talked about a web site he got from an article in Sky and Telescope about where to check for the pollution (something the clear sky clock doesn't show) and he said something about the jet stream lifting up the pollution (but he can explain it much better than I). -----Original Message----- From: utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Joe Bauman Sent: Monday, June 30, 2008 4:41 PM To: Utah Astronomy Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Gravel Quarry Fri/Sat Night Hi Bob and others who went, I'd be interesting in reading a report on the trip. Thanks, Ann, interesting report. I haven't been to the pit for a while. Also, were gravel operations going on then? -- Joe --- On Mon, 6/30/08, Ann Blanchard <a.blanchard@ugs.utah.edu> wrote: From: Ann Blanchard <a.blanchard@ugs.utah.edu> Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Gravel Quarry Fri/Sat Night To: "Utah Astronomy" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Date: Monday, June 30, 2008, 4:51 PM Craig and I went both Friday and Saturday.
