I'm with you and Chuck too. I asked a woman at work why she was (in this case texting) texting a friend to meet somewhere after work instead of calling and she replied, "Well if I call her, I'll have to hear her tone of voice, and if she sounds down or something, I'll have to ask why." I asked her wasn't that the point of being friend and she looked at me as though I were well and truly an idiot and said "no." Then again, that might be from our 25 year age difference. -----Original Message----- From: utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of stormcrow60@xmission.com Sent: Tuesday, August 02, 2011 12:54 PM To: utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Utah Astronomy Group on Facebook (Chuck Hards) I'm with Chuck. I have to think if you don't have teenagers around your house as I do you may not fully understand it all. With my two granddaughters living here and my grandson having moved out to Air Force quarters fairly recently I have come to realize a different side of the whole "social network" kind of thing. I can't say I like it 100% of the time but I do have more of an understanding. I get sick of talking to the top of a head that is reading a text, and I think their English, abbreviations and slang may be the end of the English language as we know it but then I am pretty sure my father and mother thought very much the same with regard to what we were doing. Long live The King of Rock and Roll!

Ann, I've noticed this with my own daughter. I think kids today (and many adults) don't know the meaning of the word "friend". They use it instead of the more appropriate term "acquaintance". With Facebook, most of the "friends" aren't even acquaintences. The meaning of the word "friend" has been considerably diluted.
So I go off list for a while myself (my Swedish wife was here for all of July) and all kinds of interesting things happen while I'm away (glad to see you back Chuck!). The wife now has her green card after 18 months of trying (it really is green BTW) and with luck she'll be moving over in the Spring. Because of my long-distance relationships (a daughter in Calif. too) Facebook is the ideal way for me to keep in touch. I also think it would be a vast improvement over email for this list. The fact that you can upload photos directly from a smart phone is one good reason. I like getting the SLAS updates too, despite the fact that I haven't had time to take advantage of any so far (at least it's nice to be reminded). If you only have two friends on FB, the time you spend there is obviously going to be pretty minimal! (I have over 200, so I do sort thru a lot of stuff). But as was stated earlier, you spend as little or as much as you like (and FB posts can in turn trigger e-mail alerts if you prefer). It's been really fun to reconnect with folks I haven't seen or heard from in over 30 years. It's also been a good way to get better acquainted with guys like Joe Bauman as well, since I don't get to hang out with him in person very often, and am able to see some of his other photographic and personal interests that I did not know about! Anyway, apparently I'm the exception here -- but I love it. I love FB too, Chuck. It's great to hang out with you there, learn about your interests and travels. So my advice to others is, don't knock it if you haven't tried it. Besides connecting me with lots of folks with like interests (and I have a diversity of them), FB keeps me in touch with dear high school friends I thought I had lost forever. Ah, yet another assumption. I actually set up an account using my old pen name some time ago, just for the purpose of "checking it out". (yes I know it's not allowed, but pfft to that) Total strangers have requested "friend" status, lol. I ignore them. My GF and daughter both do Facebook and I am apalled at the amount of time they waste there. I just don't have the inclination or resources to dovetail this into my life. It doesn't offer enough in return for the time investment. I just don't care about uncle Bob's Jack Russell or that my third cousin's baby burped. Be that as it may, if it works for you, stick with it.

So, you're implying that those who spend a lot of time on these various sites don't have a life? I'm not sure how to take that.
I do have a Facebook account, I can barely remember my login info. I have high school friends and college friends listed as friends. I feel no closer to them, it is still not really human contact and not at all the same as seeing them in person. I have also heard of people being followed on this "social media" to time robberies.
I think the thing that is most telling is that there are companies paid to create false accounts on twitter and facebooks. All to make a politician, product, or organization to seem more popular. I've heard claims of some "friends" on these site can be over 80% being from factitious. I also, could really care less what a news viewer tweets, surely there is "real" news they could cover. Then again maybe not. I do think many youngsters (likely other also) would be better off figuring out what they are going to do with the rest of their lives. A Facebook account and welfare will keep you off the street. Josephine, Chuck is a bachelor, he got his life back. On 8/8/11, Josephine Grahn <bsi@xmission.com> wrote:

There are quite a few dead people that make more money dead than when they were alive. James Dean for example and there are many law firms that protect that identity.

Well, their estates do, I doubt they are depositing any checks where they are now. Legendary singer James Brown was the defendant in a paternity case- two years after his death! The man got around, and apparently didn't let a little thing like death from cutting into his social life!
Yes, their heirs are cashing in.
