I missed any crowds by 2 blocks, went to Veterans Park in Cedar City. Found a nice shaded picnic table next to the river and had a pleasant dinner, before 1st contact. Gave away 6 eclipse glasses (not for $10), they did earn some good will though. The only reason I thought the moon seemed to pass off center was all the talk. I would be lying if I said it was clearly off center. I did see some faint baileys beads near 2nd contact. To Mike: I did get the feeling that once I reached Cove Fort I would see the annular if the car broke down.
I think the thing I liked best was no one yelling 1st contact, 2nd Contact, 3rd Contact, etc.
An annular is never waste of time, but I will never understand why someone would have left such a beautiful place, as Bryce, to go to a crowded dusty place, but thats just me. Either you did not pay for the gas or money was no object, maybe just the need for attention. I was surprised in that the sun seemed much higher above the horizon for 2nd and 3rd contact.
BTW, I very nice woman from the tourist office saved some eclipse posters for us until monday morning. We ended up with three, I only need one, so to a good home I would give one away. Perhaps an essay, as to why you would be the best person to receive it.
Erik
OK, I baited y'all with that one, maybe meaning to subliminally. It would
certainly have been a waste of time for ME, obviously not for any of you. I'm glad that everyone I've heard from had a chance to enjoy the eclipse, no matter from where they were stuck observing it. (Had to get in one little dig, at least. ;-) If you really loved it, that was the Sweet Spot.
One of our interpretive rangers, Kevin Doxstatter, who is an excellent photographer, created a montage that should be posted on our (Bryce Canyon NP) facebook page. I refuse to ever go to or use facebook, so you'll have to find it on your own. It's worth a look, a really great montage.

Where will you be for the Venus Transit? I will be at the Natural History Museum. -A On Mon, May 21, 2012 at 8:26 PM, Daniel Holmes <danielh@holmesonics.com>wrote:

Ann, We had so much excitement about looking at the Sun through telescopes down here at the Gateway and out in Sandy that we're doing it again for the transit. I know that NHMU has some kind of program planned about the Transit - do you know much about it? The planetarium will also have a new supply of solar viewing glasses. For the Venus Transit we're stocking viewers made with Aluminized Mylar, not the carbon-embedded polymer we previously sold. I didn't much care for the dark yellow-orange color or the softness of the image. That worked well for the eclipse, but since Venus should be just visible without magnification against the Sun, we want an image that's more crisp and colorless. We're also laying in a supply of Baader "Astrosolar" film (0.00001 transmission for direct visual observation) in case folks want to make their own filters. Anyone here want to bring telescopes again to either Gateway or the Dimple Dell Rec Center on Tuesday, June 5 (4PM - sunset) for public Venus transit viewing? Does that mean you don't want to be at the library again? We had quite a few people (haven't done a writeup for it yet--been a little busy with work), and a lot of interest for the transit. Dan On May 22, 2012, at 9:25 AM, Seth Jarvis wrote:

Seth: It’s Steve Fisher here. I have been the liaison between SLAS and the Natural History Museum of Utah since we first outlined a plan for the Venus transit with them back in October. Things are well underway and the finishing touches will be put on our event in the next seven days. This will include scheduling and setups for our event. If you have questions I might answer feel free to contact me off list and I’ll give you any information that I can and connect you with my contact at the museum if you like. Steve
