Opinions on Astro-Tech Refractor
Craig has hurt his back lifting our 11" Celestron CPC and is looking at two Astro-Tech refractors as alternative possibilities for a while (looking at prices, he still believes in Santa too). Anyway, have any of you owned, used one of these or do you know of a web site that might trusted that reviews them? They are the AT106 106m f/6.5 or the AT130 10mm F/6 . He found them on page 65 of the Sky and Telescope. I really appreciate any advice on them you can give, thanks!
Ann: Tell Craig we are sorry about his back. A lot of us know the pain of back problems. I have found that "full on reviews " of the larger Astro-Tech refractors have been very hard to find. The 130 was listed as a Sky and Telescope Best Product in 2007 but I doubt if there was a review written. There has been a great deal of talk and hype on Cloudy Nights dot com about these scopes but it is hard to get a review. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that Cloudy Nights is owned and operated by Astronomics and they import the AT products. That is what I hear anyway. We have a local fellow who owns and uses a 106. His name is George and I am afraid I do not remember his last name. I am not sure if he is a member of a local club or even a member of the Utah Astronomy list. If all else fails get hold of Jay Eads as he is the fellow who introduced me to George one night at Lakeside. I saw the 106 that night but it had a camera hooked up to it so I never got to look in an eyepiece. I have seen several AT scopes and other products. Unfortunately I have never looked through one. So I can't help you or Craig there. Tell Craig that I think he is on the right path. Not only because I am a refractor "weenie" but I know how much lighter and easier to handle a 5" refractors with a good mid weight mount can be than a large CAT. One more thing. Yes, Ann I believe in Santa also. Ann, I'm sorry to hear about Craig's back and wish him the best of luck in his recovery. I observe with George at least once a month, and yes, he owns one. I have his phone and email so if you or Craig would like to talk with him (and I'll send him an email or call to check that it is ok though knowing George it won't be a problem) I'll email you his info. My email is JayLEads at Gmail dot com. George lives in Clinton and is a member of OAS I believe. He is also on CloudyNights but I don't think he is on this list serve. I'll try to remedy that in a minute when I contact him. Let me know. Thanks, Jay On Mon, Nov 15, 2010 at 9:08 AM, <sfisher01@comcast.net> wrote:

Ann, I have a Meade 5-inch/127mm APO that I'm considering selling. It's about 13 or 14 years old. The OTA is very nice; it compares well with the most expensive APOs that I've seen, with slightly lower resolution at only the highest magnifications. Unfortunately, the mount needs service or replacement. The good news is there are some very good alternatives available to the original Meade mount for well under $1,000. If you and Craig are interested contact me offline (or anyone else, for that matter). Wayne, Honestly, I'm not sure. I've struggled so long whether or not to replace the mount, but I've never had an extra $700 or more to either do that or re-build it. (DAMN Meade service.) I won't have time today, but I'll try to check out ebay or Astromart to find comparable prices. Maybe tomorrow I can post pics and you can let me know what you think. The OTA is in "used - very fine" condition. Optics are in perfect condition. I'd only be guessing at a fair price now, so let me get some information and get back to you. Or, if you already know what it should be worth tell me and I'll give it some thought. The mount rebuilding king in (Arkansas? - can't remember) gave me some info about the mount a few months ago, but I lost his contact info and all email correspondence when my hard drive crashed recently. BTW, if anyone can give me his contact info/website address I'd appreciate it. Excuse my ignorance, but does he do imaging, and has he used equatorial mounts? I hurt my back a while ago lifting my SCT as well. I've tried a number of things, including smaller SCTs, EQ-mounted SCTs, and refractors. I love refractors, but do miss the resolution of larger scopes. And larger refractors such as the 130 will still require a substantial mount, perhaps more so than an 8" SCT. For the most part there isn't anything really good that's really light, but they all distribute the weight differently. Some day I hope to try a dob .... _______________________________________________ Utah-Astronomy mailing list Utah-Astronomy@mailman.xmission.com http://mailman.xmission.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/utah-astronomy Visit the Photo Gallery: http://www.slas.us/gallery2/main.php Visit the Wiki: http://www.utahastronomy.com
Thanks we do also have an computerized equatorial mount that Celestron sold as some kind of deal for $700 with a 5 or 6" or??" scope (sorry, I can't remember) and the mount is, I believe, a CG5 and while it is nice and heavy, Craig and I can each take an end and carry it. The 11" CPC only has a handle on one side for some perverse reason and it weighs about 65 pounds, so I can't really help with it. He hasn't done imaging, it doesn't work with the 11" and I think he would just like to try some moon shots and stick with admiring the gems the other folks in the club spend such time and care creating. We do love the images in the 11 inch, but if it comes down to going out or not, I guess compromise is the answer. So, if he is not doing imaging, do you think the CG5 could support the 130? Thanks for your advice, if it comes from another Craig, it's got to be good! -----Original Message----- From: utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Craig Smith Sent: Monday, November 15, 2010 10:07 PM To: 'Utah Astronomy' Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Opinions on Astro-Tech Refractor Excuse my ignorance, but does he do imaging, and has he used equatorial mounts? I hurt my back a while ago lifting my SCT as well. I've tried a number of things, including smaller SCTs, EQ-mounted SCTs, and refractors. I love refractors, but do miss the resolution of larger scopes. And larger refractors such as the 130 will still require a substantial mount, perhaps more so than an 8" SCT.
