I'm sorry to report that long time SLAS member Andy Bogdan died earlier today at his home, possibly of a heart attack. Ken Harris is writing up a piece for tomorrow's issue of News. SLAS president Jachmann says there will be a special mention of Andy and his contributions to SLAS in the next issue of Nova and at this month's SLAS meeting. A true SLAS supporter to the end, Andy's last phone conversation with Ken early today was about their plans to work at SPOC tomorrow. Andy, my friend, you will be missed. Patrick
What a shock! He like Ken, are the type of people you could count on to drop what they were doing to help out at SPOC when others couldn't or wouldn't. Sad news indeed... Quoting Patrick Wiggins <paw@trilobyte.net>:

This is shocking and sad indeed. Please convey my sympathy to all who knew and loved him. -- Joe
I returned late last night from a last-blast-of-summer trip to Yellowstone. This morning is the first chance I've had to read email for a few days. (Weather in YNP was lovely, BTW.) My heartfelt sympathies for Andy's family. I would have enjoyed knowing him even better than I did. Andy contributed so much to SPOC - couldn't SLAS, or at the very least, this group make an appropriate contribution to a worthy cause in his name? I'd say "send flowers," but I've always thought that they are a waste of money and just go to prop up the funeral-industrial complex. Thoughts anyone? I did not get to know Andy and it seems that was my loss. My heart goes out to his family and friends. As far as what to do for the family - when my husband died I appreciated notes from friends telling stories about him. Some of these ended up being things that I did not know because I was not around him all the time. Most of the stories were pure Fred and I enjoyed reading them as did my children. They were so young when their dad died that they really came to know their dad through the eyes of his friends. How about SLAS collecting stories and presentating them to the family? -A
I love the idea. We have time between now and the next SLAS meeting to do something. We should have lots of photos of Andy at work on SPOC. I don't have any stories of my own to tell (at least nothing comes immediately to mind), but I'd be happy to collate and assemble stories and photos into a book of sorts. I'll even do the printing and binding. I've lost track of who's now on the SLAS Board, but I suppose they'll want to decide an appropriate response. I'm making the offer, though. If the Board is agreeable, the Board and others can send stuff to me and I'll get it all started. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ann House" <annchouse@gmail.com> To: "Utah Astronomy" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Tuesday, September 06, 2005 9:45 AM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Sad news |I did not get to know Andy and it seems that was my loss. What Guy, too cryptic? I don't like to send flowers to funerals and prefer that SLAS not do so. However, I'll defer to the majority opinion. ----- Original Message ----- From: <diveboss@xmission.com> To: <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Tuesday, September 06, 2005 10:22 AM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Sad news | Quoting Kim Hyatt <kimharch@cut.net>: | | > I'd say "send | > flowers," but I've always thought that they are a waste of money and just go | > to prop up the funeral-industrial complex. | > | > Thoughts anyone? | | | What??? | | _______________________________________________ | Utah-Astronomy mailing list | Utah-Astronomy@mailman.xmission.com | http://mailman.xmission.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/utah-astronomy | Visit the Photo Gallery: http://www.utahastronomy.com | | ______________________________________________________________________ | This e-mail has been scanned by Cut.Net Managed Email Content Service, using Skeptic(tm) technology powered by MessageLabs. No, I guess I just never gave the Flower/Funeral-Industrial Complex connection thing a whole lot of thought. Thanks for the info. The scrapbook idea of Ann's is good and I'm on board with that.

While I agree with Kim, I understand Siegfried has already sent flowers. FWIW, a tree was planted in Andy's honor at SPOC yesterday right next to where Andy most recently worked. Patrick
Yes, very sorry to hear that, he seemed much too young.
