Hope I didn't offend anyone - again. If so, I apologize.
Absolutely not. We just saw an open opportunity to tease you. Having grown up in the South (and yes, I did live in Atlanta for a little while in my late 20's), it's amazing how sensitive the region still is on the topic of Sherman and the Civil War. Most places, including Utah, have a touchy spot or two on some topic. But the Civil War is still alive in much of the South. It's a common argument in the South that the war was about state's rights and not about slavery. But of course it was about state's rights to have slaves. Sherman was a heck of a general, as was Robert Lee and Ulysses Grant (Stonewall Jackson on the other hand was a genuine nut-job). Too bad they were fighting each other. With history on our side, it's easy to debate the necessity of many acts of war. That's true whether it's Sherman's march, Hiroshima or the bombing of Dresden. Of course you don't have that luxury at the time. ------------------------- So will you be formally announcing your candidacy tomorrow night?
Speaking of still fighting the Civil War-- My wife and I drove through North Carolina in the 1970s and stopped at an antique shop near Fort Fisher. There were a bunch of Union buttons for sale. I asked the shopkeeper why she didn't have any Confederate buttons. She drew herself up and huffed, "We fought 'em barefoot and naked!" -- Joe
A few years ago my family and I made a pilgrimage to the national military park at Vicksburg. Our guide, who was from Mississippi, claimed that the war wasn't about states' rights but about money. Of course, he said this after asserting that the war wasn't about slavery, either. The Civil War - uh, War Between the States, or War for Southern Independence ("there weren't nothin' civil about it, son") - has fascinated me since my childhood. My wife's maiden name is Davis. Jefferson Davis is a distant relation. Our ancestors may have been shooting at each other. I repeat: if nominated, I will not run; if elected, I will not serve. I've enjoyed the years that I was given the opportunity to serve on the SLAS Board, and if I still lived in SLC I'd consider doing so again. Logistically, it simply isn't possible for me to do so now. What about yourself, Michael? I may have to check the SLAS constitution, but I think that even southerners are permitted. -----Original Message----- From: utah-astronomy-bounces+kimharch=cut.net@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces+kimharch=cut.net@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Michael Carnes Sent: Monday, August 21, 2006 11:20 AM To: Utah Astronomy Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Way OT
