If you missed it Bob Taylor was fantastic on the radio tonight. Very informative for the general public. WAY TO GO BOB. Very nice job. I think that Walmart and Sears telescope sales will take a nose dive for a while. Mark Mark Shelton Indian Hill Middle School Tech Ed. Which show was it? I hope the club doesn't get sued. We used to call them generically "department store" trash scopes, to avoid singling-out specific retailers. On Mar 18, 2012 9:52 AM, <erikhansen@thebluezone.net> wrote:

I listened, I was left with impression the Total Annular would be visible from SLC. I think he just slightly misspoke probably should have said it will be 65% of Sun coverage. Good Job though, nice plugs for SPOC, Sun Parties, Bryce, and the Museum of Natural History Transit Event. Does Sears sell telescopes any more? Special order only? Good advice, if a sales person is touting magnification, run don't walk to the exit. Which show was it?

There were a "few" errors but I'm the last one to be critical. I thought it was an excellent interview. I would have screwed up immensely. It probably really threw people who were tuning in for a discussion of Astrology for a loop.

To err is human...... anyway be patient with Astrologers who may come to SPOC. Probably a good thing it was not a call in program who knows what questions would have been asked. Fake Moon Landings or UFO abduction?
It will be interesting to see if this increases "fringe" at Star Parties, of course outsiders may consider us fringe (nerds).

It will be interesting to see if this increases "fringe" at Star Parties, of course outsiders may consider us fringe (nerds).
There were a "few" errors but I'm the last one to be critical. I thought it was an excellent interview. I would have screwed up immensely. It probably really threw people who were tuning in for a discussion of Astrology for a loop.

The Fringe, archived by date.
I hope the club doesn't get sued. We used to call them generically "department store" trash scopes, to avoid singling-out specific
retailers.

Pretty much. We just hang our hat on a different peg than the crystal-people. Some of us even know how to hackey-sack. There is some cross-over... ;-) I know of a few SLASer's with honest-to-ghod tin-foil hats. They shall remain nameless. I swear to the FSM. I know this is an old thread, but I've been away from the list for a few days and I beg your indulgence. In 1991 when I was SLAS Prez, I took a few calls about the eclipse trip that SLAS put together for La Paz, Baja, Mexico. The calls were always couched like this: Question 1: "So, wasn't flying to Mexico to see a total eclipse a rather nerdy thing to do?" Question 2: "Do you believe in UFO's?" Then there was the call I took from a radio station in Great Britain about the (in)famous bowling ball experiment. "Fringe" does seem to fit us well.
Amateur Astronomers are an eclectic bunch, in my opinion that adds to the appeal. It is a hobby 1st and foremost.
