Possible names for the new planet: Tombaugh (although not in character with the other names taken from classical Roman mythology) Goofy (well, we already have Pluto) Hillary (it's a cold, ice world) K-pax, K-mart, Kay-Bee, etc. Anyone else have suggestions for the name of the new planet before it's officially announced? __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? The discovery team had a working name: Xena (as in the Warrior Princess). But they stress it's not the name they actually proposed. Patrick Chuck Hards wrote:

I propose "Tartarus". The following is from Encyclopedia Mythica. However, when you see the word "anvil", please substitute "bowling ball." Tartarus is the lowest region of the world, as far below earth as earth is from heaven. According to the Greek poet Hesiod, a bronze anvil falling from heaven would take nine days and nights to reach earth, and an object would take the same amount of time to fall from earth into Tartarus. Tartarus is described as a dank, gloomy pit, surrounded by a wall of bronze, and beyond that a three-fold layer of night. Along with Chaos, Earth, and Eros, it is one of the first entities to exist in the universe. Bob
This always happens. It's just too hard to choose between two killer names like "Tartarus" and "Stinky". What if it has a moon? ____________________________________________________ Start your day with Yahoo! - make it your home page http://www.yahoo.com/r/hs
My suggestions: Cerberus, who guards the entrance to the Netherworld and is a companion of Pluto. Or, failing that, Diana, the Huntress. She ranged far (hunting) and was cold -- ask the poor sap who saw her naked. Acteon? What was his name. Anyway, Diana would tie in to the Princess Di worship. -- Joe On Sat, 30 Jul 2005, Chuck Hards wrote:

Patrick, I saw you on Channel 4 News earlier today. You were awful Giddy. What do you owe to your exuberance? The discovery of the planet, or, the pretty young lass???
Apparently it does have a Moon. They call it Pluto. ;) Quoting Chuck Hards <chuckhards@yahoo.com>:

My vote is for "Janus" - The Roman god of Doors Reasoning: Planet X (ten) stands as the gate to the "heavens." The point to which we may never one day reach, but will always hope to obtain. Janus will face out solar system, from its far out position, and will keep its other "face" towards to deep sky. Cheers, James. -------------------- http://www.gwydir.demon.co.uk/jo/roman/janus.htm /"Janus kept the gate of Heaven, so he became the god of doors and gates. He was very important, because a house is only as strong as its doors. / /His temple in Rome had its doors thrown open in times of War, and closed in times of Peace. They were usually open! The Emperor Augustus closed the doors of the temple, since he brought peace to the Roman Empire./ /Janus had two faces, one looking forwards and one looking back, since a door can let you in, or let you out. The first month of the year is named after him. In January, we look back at the last year, and forward to the next."/
