Oh boy oh boy oh boy - What a day! I don't think that anyone here has seen so many people in the park. In spite of large crowds, we had eclipse glasses for all (ordered 8,000) and no safety issues. We did have some transportation/logistical problems after the main event with so many people trying to board buses at the same time, but overall a great success. This was my first annular eclipse, but I am now as convinced as ever that driving to the centerline (Kanarraville or wherever) was a waste of time. For the overall aesthetic experience, Bryce Canyon was just perfect: beautiful scenery, cool temps, and enough people to have a real party atmosphere. The cheers and shouts at annularity echoed all throughout the main Bryce Amphitheater area. I was operating a Coronado scope with a video camera attached to feed to a projector in the parking area for visitors. All who saw it were impressed. It allowed observing Bailey's Beads a good 10 or 15 seconds before they were seen visually and there were good sunspots and prominences visible throughout the eclipse. From my post at Inspiration Point the western horizon was less than one degree high; we saw the sun set with just a small nibble still showing out of the upper left quadrant, and I even saw a modest green flash. Now for the Venus transit. Kim
Kim, I take exception the the characterization that driving to the centerline was a waste of time. I had a great time and an exceptional view under cloudless skies on the centerline with family and friends. It most certainly was not a waste of time. Seeing the eclipse from just across the road from Siegfried, Bruno and Rodger, I can attest that driving to the centerline wasn't a waste of time. And isn't Bryce farther, at least in terms of hours on the road? We had a wonderful view of everything but the last part of the final partial phase, and seeing the sun set while eclipsed gave a special thrill. We were with friends and ran into other friends at Kanarraville. It was a blast! I hope to post at least one of my 300-plus photos tonight. Best wishes, Joe ________________________________ From: Siegfried Jachmann <siegfried@jachmann.org> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Monday, May 21, 2012 12:13 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Eclipse at Bryce Canyon Kim, I take exception the the characterization that driving to the centerline was a waste of time. Bryce would have been a good place to watch the eclipse, but the centerline is better. I was able to see the sun off center just after second contact, and just before third contact. The bonus is getting to see the moon centered on the sun. All of that being said, I had more fun with the shadows and the otherworldly eeriness of the lighting. now that was strange! The flight was fulfilling, the eclipse was good, the shadows and lighting were fun, but the company of an old friend, Richard Brady, and my son Chris were tops. Brent
And Brent, that's how it should be. I don't fault anyone for their choice of location. We had the additional pleasure of having Christopher Go in our party. Christopher is a widely recognized planetary photographer. Sharing this with him, my wife Bruno, my son Rob and his wife, 3 of my grandkids, and Rodger and his wife was a wonderful experience. It was the right choice for me. For the record we were right on a surveyed centerline location. On Mon, May 21, 2012 at 2:10 PM, Brent Watson <brentjwatson@yahoo.com>wrote:

We were at Rainbow Point at the south end of Bryce Canyon and the moon was perfectly centered as far as we could tell at 52 power. The horizon was also very close to 0 degrees. No clouds - great location, no dust, restrooms and temperatures around 65 deg. F. We had clear skies Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights at the star party. An added bonus on Saturday night-Sunday morning star party was that Garfield County had a planned blackout from 12 AM to 5 AM. I think there was a slight darkening when the blackout occurred. OK, I baited y'all with that one, maybe meaning to subliminally. It would certainly have been a waste of time for ME, obviously not for any of you. I'm glad that everyone I've heard from had a chance to enjoy the eclipse, no matter from where they were stuck observing it. (Had to get in one little dig, at least. ;-) If you really loved it, that was the Sweet Spot. One of our interpretive rangers, Kevin Doxstatter, who is an excellent photographer, created a montage that should be posted on our (Bryce Canyon NP) facebook page. I refuse to ever go to or use facebook, so you'll have to find it on your own. It's worth a look, a really great montage. Kim
I missed any crowds by 2 blocks, went to Veterans Park in Cedar City. Found a nice shaded picnic table next to the river and had a pleasant dinner, before 1st contact. Gave away 6 eclipse glasses (not for $10), they did earn some good will though. The only reason I thought the moon seemed to pass off center was all the talk. I would be lying if I said it was clearly off center. I did see some faint baileys beads near 2nd contact. To Mike: I did get the feeling that once I reached Cove Fort I would see the annular if the car broke down.
I think the thing I liked best was no one yelling 1st contact, 2nd Contact, 3rd Contact, etc. An annular is never waste of time, but I will never understand why someone would have left such a beautiful place, as Bryce, to go to a crowded dusty place, but thats just me. Either you did not pay for the gas or money was no object, maybe just the need for attention. I was surprised in that the sun seemed much higher above the horizon for 2nd and 3rd contact. BTW, I very nice woman from the tourist office saved some eclipse posters for us until monday morning. We ended up with three, I only need one, so to a good home I would give one away. Perhaps an essay, as to why you would be the best person to receive it. Erik OK, I baited y'all with that one, maybe meaning to subliminally. It would

Erik
OK, I baited y'all with that one, maybe meaning to subliminally. It would
certainly have been a waste of time for ME, obviously not for any of you.

Mark submitted an essay months ago, while we worked in his wood shop, I can't think of a better place for it.
I guess also a consolation prize for volunteering in the SL area. "you say it best when you say nothing at all" Excellent essay Mark! I really enjoyed it ;-)

Erik
OK, I baited y'all with that one, maybe meaning to subliminally. It would
certainly have been a waste of time for ME, obviously not for any of you.
