Has anyone ever seen a daylight meteor train? I have seen daylight meteors several times, but never one that left a visible train (in the daylight, that is) until yesterday. What I saw was a "streak" of what appeared to be contrail, except it was only about 10-degrees long. It looked just like a cosmic artist drew a quick "slash" of contrail. No bright light from the meteor itself, just the train, then it drifted and dissipated over the next 20 minutes. Looked just like a white, daytime version of what some of us have seen at night many times. Anyone else? C. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Friends. Fun. Try the all-new Yahoo! Chuck Strange things happening in Utah also, good. I was shooting a wedding Saturday and about an hr or so after sunset, I was looking at the Big Dipper and Polaris when a bright starlike flash (mag -2 to -4) appeared about 5 degrees away in the 2 o'clock position. At first I thought it was a plane, but that was the only flash, no plane, anyone hear of that flash on Saturday?? Aloha Rob www.RobRatkowski.com
Some time last year about 3:30 in the afternoon, while driving, I saw a bright green fireball traveling in an eastwardly direction. This left a trail behind it that dissipated in less than a minute. Unfortunately since I was on a freeway entrance ramp, once it disappeared off the top of the windshield, I was unable to pull over and get a better look. Even still, it was a very neat experience. John, I also saw a bright green fireball falling almost vertically, backlight by the setting sun. I just happenned to have "glacier glasses" on at the time. It went down behind Kennecott, still fiery as it went behind the mountains. The train only lasted about 15 seconds, but I too was driving, west on 21st so. in Sugarhouse about 20 years ago. Surprising. --- John and Lisa Zeigler <john@johnstelescopes.com> wrote:

CBS radio news was reporting that 2:40 a.m. this morning, local time, an extremely bright flash lit up Puget Sound. The CBS web site says there also were booms, and speculates a meteorite came through. I am wondering if Chuck's and others' observations tie in with some big new meteor shower. -- Joe
Hi Joe: It would be an enormously wide meteoroid stream, but anything is possible. I wonder if we are in the middle of a previously-known minor shower, or one that has been inactive in recent decades??? I read that the speculation of a meteorite landing near Chehalis was discounted, unfortunately. --- Joe Bauman <bau@desnews.com> wrote:

Here is a site with a fairly comprehensive list of meteor showers: http://csep10.phys.utk.edu/astr161/lect/meteors/shower_list.html Note that there are 3 happening right about now, with the Tau Herculids peaking on or about June 3...and this shower is listed as being a month long in duration! Now THAT's a wide stream. C. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Friends. Fun. Try the all-new Yahoo! Messenger. http://messenger.yahoo.com/
