Hello list, Now that it's trying to get cold I'm thinking again about keeping frost off my corrector plate this coming winter. That, of course, has me thinking of Joe's "Frosty the Telescope" picture. :) But seriously, IIRC there was some talk here last year about someone local making custom dew shields for SCTs. Who was that? I'm thinking it might be time to get one for my C-14. Thanks! patrick

Last year I purchased a Dew Buster control for my C11 and other items. I got busy and built numerous heater straps that are shown how to build on Dew Busters Web site. I build one for the corrector, one for the piggybacked TAK FC76, one for the Telrad, one for each of my finders scopes, one for the hand control, and one to warm my hands up. I also built a dew shield out of Sono Tube. I found that the factory roll up type suck. The resistors are inexpensive. I figured I could build dew heater straps for $5.00 dollars for the C11. Hey Patrick; Some months ago, there was a thread about making dew shields. They are very easy to make out of various materials. One of the best materials is thin closed-cell foam that is originally intended for backpacking sleeping pads. Try to find foam that is flat (not corrugated) and thin, around 3/8". If you would like help with making one, just bring the foam to one of the ATM sessions (next one is this Saturday), and you'll end up with a decent dew shield. Shields such as this do a good job of passively keeping dew at bay, but if you want a more robust solution, you would want a dew heater. These are more difficult to make, but if you are good with a soldering iron, they are doable by the ATMer. If you have a hard time finding the closed cell foam as I've described, let me know, I may be able to help you find some. Take care, Mat -----Original Message----- From: utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Wiggins Patrick Sent: Tuesday, October 30, 2012 9:12 PM To: utah astronomy listserve utah astronomy Subject: [Utah-astronomy] Frost prevention Hello list, Now that it's trying to get cold I'm thinking again about keeping frost off my corrector plate this coming winter.
