Hello, I have ok skies at my home in Herriman, but I am wondering just a couple of newbie type questions. First, are there any good dark sky areas with 45 minutes of Herriman that any one knows of and will share? Next, is it worth it to plan a trip out to SPLOC with the equipment during the winter? Anyway, just a couple of easy questions and any advice I would appreciate it. Thanks, Jay
Hi Jay, I can't speak to to nearby observing sites (there are others on the list better qualified to speak to that). As for using SPOC in the winter, the grounds are open year round but there is no power and no shelter and the snow can get pretty deep. If Joe is looking for company you might want to tag along on one of his regular outings. patrick On 01 Dec 2008, at 22:49, Jay Eads wrote:

Jay is always welcome with me! I head out to the Wedge whenever I can, but I have promised Cory that I'm shut down for the winter, and it's not smart to break a promise to the wife. See you in the spring, if you'd like .... Jay: Herriman has fairly good skies. I've done some school parties there and I rate it better than SPOC. To stay within 45 minutes try out past Eagle Mountain and Cedar Fort. A favorite spot is on the road between Faust and Five mile pass. There are many quad runner trails off the pavement that allow you to get away from the highway light and at night you are pretty much alone. I suggest going out early enough to scout around in the daylight, take a lunch and set up at sunset. Of course this is "wilderness" so there is nothing there that you don't bring for yourself but it's very dark to the west and south. DT --- On Mon, 12/1/08, Jay Eads <jayleads@gmail.com> wrote:
