Re: [Utah-astronomy] U.S. students fail to crack top 20
Back on Nov 22nd, I purchased dinner and it came to $6.03. I gave the cashier $10.05 and she says "oh shit!" and walks off, rummages around, rummages around and finally finds a calculator. She entered $10.00 in the register before I handed her the change so the register didn't tell her what change to give me. I started to say something but decided to let it ride... it took her 3 tries on the calculator to come up with the correct change to give me. Sad. It's not just people in service industry jobs and simple math. I know many educated folks who can't spell common words. One, a teacher with an English degree is particularly bad at spelling and grammar. I know teachers who can't deal with the simplest algebraic expressions. There are excellent teachers out there, to be sure, but many who make me wonder about how rigorous their degree program was. On Thu, Dec 5, 2013 at 8:37 AM, Bruce Hugo <bruce.hugo@yahoo.com> wrote:

Then there's the "Jaywalking" segment on the Tonight Show where Leno asks people on the street simple current events, geography or history questions that have most of the interviewees stumped. I'm hoping that those segments are heavily edited to get the most laughs. ________________________________ From: Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Thursday, December 5, 2013 8:50 AM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] U.S. students fail to crack top 20 It's not just people in service industry jobs and simple math. I've seen it and have wondered if some were playing dumb just to get on Jaywalking. I feel the same way about adults who can't make the simple conversion from Universal Time to Mountain Daylight Time, especially if they consider themselves astronomers. I'm not a math wizard but I've made it a point to learn how to make important conversions in my head, like miles to kilometers, Fahrenheit to Celsius and UT to either MDT or MST. I didn't master these skills until I was in my 50's. We need to be careful when we grumble about "the kids these days". We may sound like grumpy old men. DT

If I sound like a grumpy old man, it's because I am. I actually don't have trouble converting km. into mi. or cm. into in., etc. But I do have trouble with time conversions to UTC because, for some strange reason, I can never remember if we're on Daylight Savings Time or regular time in any given month. And then if I do find out, I can't remember if England is minus six hours from Silly Time or regular time. Finally, for purely patriotic reasons, I hate it when people (PATRICK, are you reading?) try to force km., cm., UTC, etc. down the throats of perfectly well-adjusted Americans who prefer our own measurement units. Why should we kowtow to anybody? I don't give a damn what units the British use; we fought our revolution so we didn't have to call anybody Your Majesty or use no stinkin' kilometers on our traffic signs! Joe, I am sorry tosay this, but I am in VIOLENT agrement with the attempted use of the MKS or CGS system. Yes, they are nice for relational calculations, but our system works well too. I guess some people can't figure the conversions from ounces (advp.) or ounces (troy) to pounds or quarts. And what is a short ton, or a firkin, or furlong, or a rod, or a hogshead, ..... There are programs that do all that for you. A pint is a pound the world around. At least accurate enough for figuring for most people. I solved the UT to MT time conversion problem by simply adding UT as the secondary time on my wrist watch. When Patrick posts an event in UT, I simply press the upper right button on my watch and figure it out from there. ________________________________ From: Joe Bauman <josephmbauman@yahoo.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Thursday, December 5, 2013 1:05 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] U.S. students fail to crack top 20 If I sound like a grumpy old man, it's because I am. I don't have such a fancy wristwatch. But look at what you had to do because of Patrick's habit. It wouldn't hurt Patrick to simply post the times in our regular old time zone style and let these highly tuned-in astronomers do the conversions if they insist on knowing when it happens in UT. After all, they're good at doing in their heads. That seems more reasonable. Patrick? Patrick? You hoo -- Patrick .... My "fancy" wrist watch is nothing more than a $39.00 digitalized Timex purchased at WalMart. LOL! Science uses the metric system, even in the U.S.A. Seems to me that anyone who dabbles in astronomy or the physical sciences should be functional with it, at least on a "survival" level. It's not a sin to not want to use it, but if a person wants to interact with the astronomical community at-large, they can't really expect everyone else to change to units they are comfortable with. "When in Rome..." Astronomy runs on UT. It's not hard to remember when 0H UT occurs in your time zone. If it is, stick a reminder note on your monitor. Instead of a digital watch, I have UT as an alternate time on my phone. I can't stand wearing a watch. On Thu, Dec 5, 2013 at 3:37 PM, daniel turner <outwest112@yahoo.com> wrote:

It's because my brother has retired from teaching math and science. sj On Fri, Dec 6, 2013 at 7:38 AM, Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> wrote:

Science uses the metric system, even in the U.S.A. Seems to me that anyone who dabbles in astronomy or the physical sciences should be functional with it, at least on a "survival" level. It's not a sin to not want to use it, but if a person wants to interact with the astronomical community at-large, they can't really expect everyone else to change to units they are comfortable with. It wasn't until this past fall, after a trip to Canada, that I was finally able to tell how comfortable a certain temperature is when reported in celsius (and I'm in my late 60s). Their evening TV weather reports are presented using that system. I now know that the ideal temperature is between 20 and 30 degrees C, which translates to between 68 and 86 degrees F (just transpose the two fahrenheit numbers). ________________________________ From: daniel turner <outwest112@yahoo.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Thursday, December 5, 2013 11:58 AM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] U.S. students fail to crack top 20 I feel the same way about adults who can't make the simple conversion from Universal Time to Mountain Daylight Time, especially if they consider themselves astronomers. DT

Sad.
