New Mount or New Telescope?
Ok, I've had my 8" dobsonian for a few years now. I like the scope and it functions just fine for me. But, I want an equatorial mount. I know there are platforms you can put under the dobsonian to give it tracking capabilities, but that's not what I want. So, is there a type of mount out there that I can attach my dobsonian tube to, or should I get a new telescope? ++++++++++++++++++ Troy Davidson www.istroyworking.com
Troy, What are you looking to do? Do you just want to change mounts for visual or do you want to do astrophotography? You'd probably need at least the Orion Atlas EQ-G http://www.telescope.com/control/product/~category_id=mounts_and_tripods/~pc... or something similar for around $1000 to $1400 to mount it. You will need to purchase tube rings and a CG-5 style dovetail plate from Orion. Unbolt the Dobsonian side bearings (you may want to remove the mirror to do this) and add the tube rings and dovetail plate. You can then mount the OTA to any EQ mount that will take the CG5 style dovetail plate. You could possibly get by with a Celestron CG-5GT http://www.optcorp.com/product.aspx?pid=2060 which is a cheaper alternative IF you don't want to do astrophotography (the The Skyview Pro would also work for just visual work). You may want to consider a smaller scope with all the bells and whistles for imaging and keep the 8 inch dob for when you want to get in touch with the night sky as a simple pleasure. Just a thought and others can sound off who have much greater knowledge of equatorial mounts than I. On Sun, Aug 22, 2010 at 3:03 PM, Troy Davidson <clandaith@gmail.com> wrote:
