Ms. Obama will host a star party at the Whitehouse tonight with about 20 scopes, beginning at 6pm MDT tonight. http://www.nasa.gov/home/astronomy_night.html "President Obama will speak about the importance of science, engineering and math education and his support for astronomy’s capacity to promote a greater awareness of our place in the universe, expand human knowledge and inspire the next generation of explorers." Finally, indoctrination I can get behind, ha ha.
I saw the NASA broadcast, good short speech recognizing 400 years of astronomy, Obama then looked at the Double Double (I thought light pollution at Harmon's was bad!), I get the feeling the ambient light was too bright for him to see anything. I hope they had real telescopes there, IE refractors (kidding again). I sure hope he heard from the Dark Sky Association, that would have been the real teaching moment.
