Having just joined the airplane owners "club" I celebrated today by flying my new toy to Wendover for a late afternoon lunch. The flight over and the buffet were fun but the best part was the flight back. There's just something magic about flying at night. Flying over the darkness of the West Desert with just about every light in the cockpit off and the airplane trimmed so that it's flying nose high you can almost imagine you're in space. A wonderful experience. pw p.s. If anyone would like to share the experience just let me know. Now that I don't have to rent anymore all I ask for a ride is to share the operating expenses.
It's got to be pretty tough trying to drive while operating the remote control all the way to Wendover for a salad and baked potato... What do you do, just flop the remotes antenna out the window and hope a passing car doesn't hit it? Quoting Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com>:

Seriously, Patrick, congratulations! Thanks. I figured that after 35+ years of flying it's about time.
Did you name her? Hadn't even thought of that. Too busy learning how to use all the fancy avionics (not like the old days...).
And besides, I don't know that my other guys in the deal would approve. :) pw

BTW, what make and model is the plane? It's a 4 seat, single engine Cessna (so, alas, when I want to fly something with two engines I still have to rent).

I just read your email about your new plane. <snip> What would you guess that it would cost us for a flight like that? Operating cost is about $50 per hour so with with two of us on board it would be about $25 per person per hour, for 3 it's about $17 and with 4 it's about $12.50 per person per hour.

Will it be raining bowling balls all over the valley now? Funny you should mention that. I had dinner last evening with one of those "getting to know you" groups in SLC. One of the ladies mentioned that she works for BLM. So I told her my only interaction with BLM had to do with dropping bowling balls from airplanes. Her response was to laugh and exclaim "So you're with _THAT_ group?!?"
Later she said that now, whenever folks in her office hear of someone doing something odd on BLM land the usual reaction is "That's even weirder than the bowling ball group." BTW, she said she and most of her coworkers did not understand the bosses' negative reaction to our proposal considering they routinely approve the rocket launches out there (http://www.uroc.org/index.php? option=com_content&task=view&id=488&Itemid=530). pw

Actually I have many pictures but only of various avionics (boring). I'm using those to find operators manuals on line so I can get a handle on how to run everything before getting in the cockpit again (it's considered bad form to fly into a mountain while trying to figure out how to run the navigation system <grin>). pw On 08 Dec 2006, at 08:15, bsi@xmission.com wrote:

Do like I am doing. I am in the middle of a correspondence course on Proctology, butt am pretty sure they offer "gloves off" type programs as well. I have a Hasbro flight simulator that may help you figure out which control does what. I'm not sure, but I think about the only 2 big things you need to know how to do, besides take off's and landings, is how to use a window to watch for mountains and the ever nagging altimeter so you will know when you are on the ground. The rest is basically flying by the seat of your pants so-to-speak... ;) BTW, what make and model is the plane? Quoting Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com>:

So what kind of plane did you get? I personally don't like flying at night. It's very difficult to find an emergency landing site should the engine go out. Bill Patrick Wiggins wrote:

The one difference is the landing light. He said you keep the landing light off for most of the descent. Then, just as you are about to touch down you switch it on and, if you don't like what you see, you switch it off. :) But seriously, as much as I like flying at night I seldom venture far from major highways. As my very first instructor showed me (in maneuvers that were probably not legal then and are certainly forbidden today) it's not all that hard in a light aircraft to set up for a landing at night between two vehicles on a long stretch of highway... pw
