Sheena's looking for star gazing spots
Hi all, Sheena McFarland is working on a story for the Tribune, compiling at Top 10 list of stargazing spots in Utah. She's looking for 5 spots within 30 minutes of the Salt Lake Valley and then another 5 anywhere in Utah. She is not on Utah-Astronomy but you can send her your suggestions at smcfarland@sltrib.com. patrick
Anyone who mentions Lakeside gets put on 'the list.' And I don't mean the Christmas Card list. On Wed, Aug 7, 2013 at 4:19 PM, Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com>wrote:

What's your beef with Lakeside, Chris? It's one of the best sites within an hour's drive of SLC. On Aug 7, 2013 7:46 PM, "Chrismo" <djchrismo@gmail.com> wrote:

Once the local paper in San Francisco ran an article about the best nude beaches in the bay area. Next day they were all crawling with looky-lews, shutterbugs, and horny 18 year old males. Luckily there are way too many good dark sites in the west desert to be ruined by a single news story. If your favorite place is overrun by RV's and ATV's, just quietly sneak off a mile in any direction and you're all alone again. I doubt you'd get more than a handful of people driving a couple of hours to a remote observing site based on a newspaper story. And, by and large, most amateur astronomers don't have to worry about the reason people would flock to a nude beach. I'm just sayin...there's a reason we aren't swimsuit models, folks. ;-) Dan has a point. Just move down the road a few miles. There's room for everyone. Sheena should definitely mention the National and State parks that have astronomy programs. Bryce, Great Basin, etc. Most of those would fall into the 5-hour category. Since the crowds there are big to begin with, there's no worry about the Great Unwashed spoiling anyone's own personal, private little corner. This might be a good opportunity for Jay to get some publicity for his big star-party in October. Mention that location. SLAS puts great effort into public outreach and I hear many members complaining about the greying of the hobby and lackluster numbers of new members. Seems to me that not cluing people in to the preferred observing sites is counterproductive and hypocritical to this argument. Or is astronomy from a grocery store parking lot good enough for most of the new people, while some of us, who can appreciate the activity on a much deeper level than they, have the dark sites to ourselves? (sarcasm) There. That should stir up some discussion. :D On Wed, Aug 7, 2013 at 11:35 PM, daniel turner <outwest112@yahoo.com> wrote:

But one of my favorite spots is only an hour away. ________________________________ From: Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Thursday, August 8, 2013 6:30 AM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Sheena's looking for star gazing spots I doubt you'd get more than a handful of people driving a couple of hours to a remote observing site based on a newspaper story. Note to Sheena: The last time I visited Lakeside, much of it was a real mess with broken glass, remnants of a large fire in the middle of my prime viewing area, ammo casings all around. This is absolutely true. I thought about starting up a cleanup campaign. So that is one more reason not to mention Lakeside. -- Joe ________________________________ From: Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Thursday, August 8, 2013 6:08 AM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Sheena's looking for star gazing spots Well, put yourself at the top of that list, since you mentioned it. Joe, I seriously doubt that the people who made that mess read the newspaper. Or even read, period. I say invite the genuinely curious about astronomy. The more intelligent people who visit the nice dark-sky sites, the fewer hooligans will come around. On Aug 8, 2013 3:35 PM, "Joe Bauman" <josephmbauman@yahoo.com> wrote:

I agree, Chuck. I'm just saying it might not be a nice place for those who do read and are looking for a dark site. Aside from SPOC, there is nothing better within 30 minutes of SLC than ones own backyard. Backyard observing often gets dismissed, but there is much that can be seen, and it won't cost you a full tank of gas to get there and back. I'm serious about the backyard suggestion. It's not ideal close to the valley, but maybe if more people lamented the light pollution, we could see more interest in shielded outdoor lighting and energy conservation. On Wed, Aug 7, 2013 at 8:00 PM, Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> wrote:
