I witnessed a spectacular, bright (~mag -2?) green bolide Friday night at 11:29. It was traveling West out of Virgo, and really lit up the sky. I actually wasn't sure it was real, thinking in fact that it might be local fireworks (because of the distinct green color and how it faded) until my Sister in law that lives up in Heber confirmed yesterday that she saw it too. Anyone else on the list happen to be out at that time? Seems there has been a fair amount of meteor activity lately; my wife and I saw another fairly bright (~mag 0) meteor last night heading South-West out of Ursa Major about 10 pm or so. Rich, any time you and a second observer at a different location see the same bolide, try and triangulate a fall location, if possible. It has been speculated that the apparent increase of meteor activity during the summer months is due to the fact that more people just happen to be outside to notice it. Statistically there should be more during winter in the northern hemisphere because the nights are much longer. Whatever the cause, they sure are neat to see. Hi Rich, I was at the Burning Man celebration near Grantsville Saturday night (to say that that was a wild party is an understatement <grin>). While talking to the property owner he mentioned he'd seen a very bright meteor the night before just before midnight. However, while the time is about the same he said it started out blue-white, then went green and finally red just before passing over the horizon. Patrick Richard Tenney wrote:

Patrick, I was standing outside with my wife, talking to some of the teenage girls that board horses at our place in Lindon; they were saddling up the horses for a "midnight" ride in the moonlight, anticipating that the full moon would soon rise, when we noticed a distinct brightening in the sky as if a flare was launched. We all then looked up and saw it a little after the fact, so it very well might have started out blue-white; by the time I saw it it was an intense green, and appeared to break up slightly and fizzle about 10 degrees above the western horizon, much like you would see a firework rocket/mortar burn up (which is what made me start to doubt that it was an actual meteor), but at that point I didn't notice any change in the color. The consensus was that none of us had ever seen anything like that before (other than my thought of "that was too bright green and too cool to be an actual meteor...").
