New Image of M65 and M66 and a lucky catch of supernova SN2013am on the day it was discovered
Hi all. My off-axis guider finally arrived from Austria on Thursday night and I was able got the new astrograph up and running perfectly. Miraculously, the skies were clear that night, so I decided to image M65 and M66 in Leo, to test the new system out. By a lucky chance, I picked a target with a supernova that was discovered the same day: SN2013am in M65. The supernova is in the galaxy on the left in the image. The new image with the supernova can be seen here: http://www.allred-astro.com//viewer.php?id=113 <http://www.allred-astro.com/viewer.php?id=113&cat=1&sub=96> &cat=1&sub=96 If you are interested, photos of the new astrograph can be seen here: http://www.allred-astro.com//nocturne.php?cat=3 <http://www.allred-astro.com/nocturne.php?cat=3> I hope you will take time to look over the image and let me know your thoughts/suggestions. I am pretty happy with the performance of the scope, but I still have some work to do with cooling fans etc. Thanks, Tyler
Patrick, I have had a few folks on Cloudy Nights suggest that my data may be of value because it was taken so early in the supernova event. Any thoughts? That's really impressive, Tyler!! Yes it is of great value because of the earliness of the discovery. How close were you to being the discoverer? Thanks Joe. I was light years away from being the discoverer, because I wasn't looking. Someone else had to point it out to me. I guess I better get in the habit of comparing my images to a reference image. Maybe I will luck into a discovery someday. Hi Tyler, Kudos on the new image. Very nice. I don't know of anyplace to send post-discovery images so I just posted a message to the Supernova list asking if anyone there knows where such images should be sent. I'll let you know if I hear anything. Regarding naming the new piece of equipment "Supernova Astrograph", in Spanish doesn't that mean Super No Go Astrograph? :) But seriously, the OTA and mount really look nice. Maybe some Saturday afternoon you'll consider a SLAS open house at your observatory. Clear skies, patrick On 24 Mar 2013, at 07:40, Tyler Allred wrote:

Tyler, Man, that is something. When you get that baby painted and flocked I can’t wait to see what’s in store. That supernova shot is great. Good choice of target. I’d love to have an observatory such as yours. For now, I have to settle for going out in the wilderness or imaging from my driveway. I have no place to put an observatory on my property. An observatory is not in the near future I’m afraid. In fact, tonight, I hope to go out to some hills and see if I can catch that comet in the CCD. If the dedicated CCD is too much, I’ll switch to the CoolPix 4500. Where I’m going isn’t what one would call the wilderness. The hills are behind a major development in St. George. It affords a good view of the western horizon with the minimum of street light glare. However, that doesn’t matter much with the near-full-Moon action going on. Wish me luck. I’m kind of new to all this equipment. Can’t wait to see what’s in store from your neck of the woods, Dave On Mar 24, 2013, at 7:32 AM, Tyler Allred <tyler@allred-astro.com> wrote:
