As a kid, my dad used to haul me around the state looking for geological curiosities. Alas, I never picked up the interest he had, but I do remember him pointing out fossil shells in the rock formations in the canyons east of the SL valley. Let's keep our eyes open for ammonites. I was told about an area not far from Castle Dale where you can find 'em. The nice thing about shells like ammonites and the oyster beds is that it's legal to collect invertebrate fossils (within reason -- for your own enjoyment, not sale, and no more than something like 25 pounds at a time), while vertebrate fossils are off-limits. Also, if it happens to be state land you should get a collecting permit from the Division of Natural Resources. -- Joe
