I am here and it is a beautiful clear but windy night, about 75F. Sitting around the camp fire looking at the stars. The weather forecast for here says storms Thursday afternoon thru Friday afternoon, clear Friday night and Saturday night The festival is still on for the weekend. We are hoping for the best. Well the weather forecast has been a real roller coaster all week but seems settled that tomorrow will be a pretty miserable rain and snow mix. Maybe Friday or Saturday might be salvageable. I am wondering is the festival still on? What types of activities seem realistic given the weather? I am trying to decide if its worth a trip down there or if I should just pick another time for a visit to the park. It's a real shame as I was looking forward to what sounded like a great time but sometimes mother nature sees it differently. (Currently looking at North Rim of the Grand Canyon to avoid the storm since I have the car packed up anyway. Great stars and better weather, but I will miss the socialization.)

Hi, I run the Great Basin Astronomy Festival and lurk around this listserv!
The park is usually very crowded during the festival. But we set aside areas for astronomy volunteers to camp that the public is not allowed to enter. We typically get 30+ volunteers, with maybe 10 - 20 scopes. I would love to have you all there! If you're interested, the schedule and volunteering info are now online: https://www.nps.gov/grba/planyourvisit/astronomy-festival.htm
Thanks, Annie

Last year I would guess there were around a dozen telescopes. I arrived on the second day, and there was still room for me. I had probably 60 or 70 look through my scope that night. There were fewer the next night due to clouds as I recall.
I have planned all year to attend again, but I've had a family obligation spring up that will keep me away this year.
I think it's a fun festival, very worth attending.

How popular is the Great Basin Astronomy festival? When do you have to get there to secure a campsite?
