Ryan, This is an excellent book. However, not knowing your math skills, it would be hard for me to judge your enjoyment of the material. It can be somewhat involved. If you’re pretty good at trig (plane and spherical), I’d say you’re good to go. The historic information in this book is outstanding. Most libraries have a copy of this book. Go take a look at it before you buy. If you’re in the SLC area go to the university library if your local library does not have a copy. I know they used to have a copy. I checked it out before I bought mine. What instruments are you interested in building? An astrolabe? Here’s a very good book about them and the price has gone down considerably in the last few years. Also, there’s a good astrolabe treatise by Geoffrey Chaucer on the web. Yep, that Geoffrey Chaucer, author of “The Legend of Good Women” (did you get that little dig, Joan?). I'd like to try my hand at building some of the experimental tools used by historical astronomers. I'm curious if this is a good book to use to explore the history of astronomy in a hands-on way. For anyone who has it, did you find the information complete enough to build projects from? Is there something better out there?
