The Mars "thingy" was mentioned in today's MER briefing. As a number of us speculated here just after the thing was first spotted, one of the panelists said they don't know for sure what it is but think it is part of the spacecraft, probably part of the airbag system. The New York Times also did a piece on the object (in the same issue where they talked about our bowling ball project). They too mentioned the airbag connection but did so in a much more humorous way.
