Interesting. I always thougth that the modern, wide-field eyepiece evolved from a simpler design: singlet > ramsden > kellner > symmetrical > plossl > konig > erfle > WF. But now I wonder now if it was created independently? You know, it's pretty unlikely that all that optical development over all those years actually occurred, and evolved into such an eyepiece. I'm going to buy a new eyepiece not by testing out several designs, but simply because I have faith in one particular type (maybe my minister/priest/bishop/favorite TV evangelist/astro magazine tells me it's better). The difference here is that I don't have to die before knowing whether or not I was a satisfied customer.
