Arrived Flagstaff last night at a reasonable hour. I was kinda washed out what with the show, 2 days of hard driving to get there, and what ever it took to get from Tucson to here. Anyway, I was ready for the salad bar at the Sizzler and bed. We were talking of going to the meteor crater and then to the Vermillion Hills Observatory. That seemed cool to me until I found out it was not the Winslow. We were talking the pros and cons of spending 3+ hours just to get there and back when Charlie slapped his leg and said, "Hey, I almost forgot about the Lowell Observatory." So, off we went. What an interesting night! For those of you who have been there, I do not have to describe the feeling of viewing Uranus through the 24" Alvin Clark! I did not appreciate the breath and reach of the Lowell family, as I just had not been that much interested. I cannot remember all of the poem hanging on the wall, but it went something like this: "Something about Boston and the land of the cod, where Lowells speak only to Cabots, and Cabots speak only to God." Quite a display on the discovery of Pluto and the back- ground of the 7 or so years of work that led up to the discovery. A 42" open truss newtonian is on display as you walk up to the observatory--I do not believe it was involved in the discovery. So now breakfast, and off to Kanab. 73
