That was my first experience with them being so close. I can empathize with your kid. Joe Bauman wrote:
Oh come on -- I've heard 'em countless times in the wilds, sometimes close, sometimes farther away. And every time it has been a fantastic treat. (Except for the time they scared our kid, who was a little guy then.) Joe
I'm going to try this as a reply. Hopefully it will make it to the site in a timely manner. If not, since it isn't time sensitive, it doesn't matter.
I remember one time back in '87 or '88 I went out to what is now called Pit 'n Pole all by myself. There I was, in total solitude, looking through my Oddesy 8, and enjoying the silence. All of a sudden the coyotes started up. They weren't very far away, maybe only 30 yards or so (it seemed). It startled me so much I about fell out of my seat. Somehow I didn't perceive it as a serenade.

Plus, in the "wilderness" even if it's cloudy you still get the peace of the desert solitude as wells as the occasional coyote serenade!!
