You don't have to use a ladder if it is pointed low enough, Joe. As with any alt/az telescope, there is geometry involved with how high the eyepiece height is for a given altitude that the scope is pointed. You'll have to ask Mike why he didn't design the scope with a lower eyepiece. Perhaps because he didn't want to be on his knees when observing low. It's simply a folded Newtonian. The secondary (flat) is 29" in diameter. That secondary is tilted so that the light cone is diverted just to the side of the telescope where a "normal" sized star diagonal then sends the light cone out at a usual angle for viewing.
