I have held samples of the shuttle protective tile material, and though not as delicate as styrofoam, it isn't very tough stuff.  Seems to me very little would be required to damage the tile material.  I believe leading edge of the wings on this shuttle had a different material protecting them.  Does anyone know about the newer leading edge material?
