You're right, of course. How about Temple Square? Lot's of space, well-illuminated, and it's protected, so to speak. The Cathedral of the Madeleine, the first Presbyterian Church, and several others are nearby if you want to hedge your bets. Alas, I missed the 1982 end of the world. (Or did it end after all and this is just another reality? I have neighbors who provide strong evidence for the latter.) I do, however, remember the hype about the "Jupiter effect." I suspect that the propaganda about the Mayan calendar and related "theories" about the 2012 end of the world will exceed the 1982 end-of-the-world hoopla. We may need a larger venue than Harmon's parking lot. I vote for someplace like Knolls - plenty of room and we could see the end (whatever it is) coming for miles. For an urban setting, I'm open to suggestions. And this reminds me of something unrelated; I think that we should plan a really big End-of-the-world Star Party for 12/21/2012.

Kim may have said that in jest but some of us remember one of the last times the world was going to end. It was 10 March 1982 and there was a book out called the Jupiter Effect that predicted on that day the planets would align leading to the end of the world. So how did SLAS react? We held an End of the World star party in the parking lot of the Harmons in Midvale (in its old location). We ended up with the biggest turnout in club history to that time (later bested by the Halley mania a few years later) with the media estimating something like 5,000 people. Quite the zoo. Just ask Siegfried. He even got his picture with the Clark on the front page of the Deseret News. So while weather prospects for a December star party makes me a bit uncomfortable, I'm all for a return to Harmons (in the new location) on "12/21/2012". End of the World, Part 2.
