swerved to avoid something else -- a hulking grey shape, a badger or racoon perhaps, fairly big.
This reminds me of something I had forgotten but which puzzled me at the time. When I was driving back from the quarry during the daylight, a large brown animal hopped along across the street and dove into the weeds. The strange thing is, I could not identify it. What it looked most like was a good-sized otter, complete with long tail. It definitely was not a fox or a dog or a cat. I'm at a loss to explain it -- a big sleek marmot with a long tail?
