I too am glad to be old enough to remember those days. None of my colleagues were even born then! (though I hate being the oldest guy at work -- feeling like a damn dinosaur some days). Sigh. And unfortunately I'm too worried about getting the mortgage paid off, and seeing my kids end up in good relationships and economic situations to give space travel much thought nowadays. I suspect most folks have similar concerns/priorities. I wish it were otherwise. /R ________________________________ From: Dave Gary <davegary@me.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Wednesday, July 16, 2014 8:33 AM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] 45 years ago today: 16 July 1969 Cruising around the moons of Saturn chomping on a frozen hot dog…what could be better? It's not a race, we'll get there eventually. Manned space exploration is horrendously expensive, and we as a country have decided to spend our tax dollars on other things. When we stop killing each other as a species, we can spend a lot less on the military, and space exploration will accellerate. You tell me when that will happen.
Sure, I'm disappointed that I won't be retiring on the moon or Mars, or vacationing on the orbiting Hilton, or taking a cruise to the moons of Saturn, but our descendants surely will. I'm good with that.

It's worse than sad. It's a giant betrayal of all the brave people who worked so hard, and those who died, to achieve the landings. In a way, I feel it's a betrayal of our species.
