Many, if not most, Intelligent Design advocates do not subscribe to Creationism. David Berlinski, one prominent critic of blind natural selection as the main mechanism for evolution, is an agnostic. Most of the members of the Discovery Institute, an organization promoting Intelligent Design, believe that the earth is ancient and evolution does occur. But they believe much of the "design" of living organisms cannot be explained by natural selection. Fred Hoyle, whom I meet in college, believed it was as likely that a whirlwind going through a junkyard created a 747 as it was that the first cell was created by blind natural forces. Hoyle gave up religion at a young age and was an agnostic. He believed in panspermia, the hypothesis that "seeds" of life exist already all over the Universe, that life on Earth may have originated through these "seeds", and that they may deliver or have delivered life to other habitable bodies. -----Original Message----- From: utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of stormcrow60@xmission.com Sent: Tuesday, March 10, 2009 12:04 PM To: utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Latest GLobal Temperature Data Hi Chuck, What you say, I can agree with. But, maybe I did not clarify myself completely with my last post. One can believe in God and still believe in evolution. I do not believe they are mutually exclusive. One can also believe in a higher deity that does not conform to the Judeo-Christian form of spirituality. My Pagan beliefs allow me to accept evolution as scientific fact. That is just how life as we know it came about. But intelligent design or creationism... at least the version that dictates that a believer has to take the Bible literally, that does not constitute science. It is religion.
