Hi Kim, I heard back from Chris Marriot, the author of SkyMap Pro about the background database and the nebulosity around the nearby star TYC 456-681-1. It was posted to the SkyMap yahoogroup. I thought I'd post the info here since some other people might be interested. Here is his reply: --- Hi Dale, If there's nebulosity around a nearby "star", then that star very likely is the galaxy. It's not at all uncommon for galaxy positions to be an arc-minute or so in error, and many "stars" in the Tycho catalog are really galactic nuclei. The background images come from the Digitized Sky Survey: http://archive.stsci.edu/cgi-bin/dss_form Regards, Chris

I can't wait to hunt for it. Too cloudy tonight. At 11th magnitude it shouldn't be too difficult, but I can't find any reference to surface brightness. Did you find any good data?
Kim

Completely black inner region! What could that mean? You're certain right about this being a strange object, Kim. Thanks, Joe

There just isn't much information on the web. I've searched with both Google and Yahoo. I was hoping someone on this list might know more.

Hi Kim, I hadn't heard about this one -- can you tell us more? Thanks, Joe

I can't find much information for this galaxy but what little I find is both interesting and puzzling. Has anyone here observed this object before?
