Are we trying to say that UV and IR radiation won't hurt your eyes? I think many eye doctors might disagree with that, I would be careful about telling people they can look at the sun without protection.
I remember when a telescope left uncovered collected the morning sun, the scope caught on fire. Optics and eyes can be hurt by the sun. I seem to remember Brent "exploded" an eyepiece doing a projection. I found a really interesting webpage about solar observing, one that
addresses a few myths that I admit I have also held for years. I recommend reading before tomorrow's eclipse, especially for those who will be interpreting the event for the public: http://mintaka.sdsu.edu/GF/vision/Galileo.html.
