Why are you opposed to an astronomy club being involved in chartering a bus for a great astronomical event? ________________________________ From: Siegfried Jachmann <siegfried@jachmann.org> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Monday, July 15, 2013 12:09 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Renting a bus You should have no trouble selling enough tickets without the club. You certainly have enough time to organize it. SJ On Mon, Jul 15, 2013 at 11:25 AM, Joe Bauman <josephmbauman@yahoo.com>wrote:
Maybe so, Siegfried. I don't want to squabble, but I think a charter bus would be a good idea in 2017. If the club does the chartering, we should have no trouble selling enough tickets to cover the cost and it would be a lot of fun. -- Joe

No Joe. The objection was having SLAS pay for your bus.

This is news to me, because I don't remember much about this bus proposal last year except for a lot of ridicule and comments about how impossible it would be, when I brought up the subject. If we had gone so far as to get a bid, I wish I had known about it because it would have been a simple matter to form a committee to decide those questions. It would have been a lot more fun for most people, and a lot less stress, to simply ride a bus down and back. Just for future reference, I'm curious to know what the bid was. Thanks, Joe

Hi Brent,
While simple in principle it ended up being far from that in practice for last year's annular.
Rodger Fry contacted the bus company and got a bid. I offered to get the word out (SLAS blasts, announcements here on UA, news releases to the media), to collect the money and to disperse the money as needed.
What was needed was someone to get with those wishing to go and work out details like when to leave, where to stop for breaks, where to observe the eclipse from and when to return. IIRC a couple of folks took a stab at that but they never seemed to be able to reach a consensus on those details (especially the "where to observe the eclipse from") so the bus never happened.
Personally I still like the idea of flying my plane up there but as I mentioned before I worry that every airport even close to the centerline will be crammed with airplanes whose pilots had the same idea.

Joe,
It occurs to me that there is no real reason why you should not rent a bus for excursions. Anyone can do it. There is no reason to rely on an organization to do it. All you need to do is fill it up and then share the cost with those who go along. I am sure you could make a real party of it, and those along would have a great time.
Please accept this at face value. What you read above should be taken at face value. There is no innuendo, nor jabbing, nor assassination intended.
